Its nice but I prefer the haggis and tatties pie. However the winner was always the Wallaces Onion bridie, hot from their now defunct shop in Castle Street, just bliss.

Ok, those are weird.

Anyone not Scottish has no idea what we’re on about. And probably not all of the Scots either.

No, nothing fancy like that. I don’t usually buy pies on impulse but it was a real “I’ve got to try one of those”.
Staying in Edinburgh, loved the train ride over the Forth and Tay bridges and I had no idea that the Discovery ship is in Dundee.

They were originally filled with mutton, but you can get all sorts of stuff scraped up off the abattoir floor in them now, a good Scotch pie is a wonderful thing, hot with a dollop of HP sauce.

When I lived in Edinburgh, I was fond of a deep fried Scotch pie in a roll with chippy sauce after an evening in the pub.

We did, open bridge in the Antarctic doesn’t bear thinking about.
Also went to the new V&A, like many new arts buildings a vast expensive spacious building with an excellent Scottish design exhibition tucked away in one corner. I guess they had to build a feature building on that site.

Always preferred the deep fried steak pies myself. Deep fried pizza better than either, it’s the food of the gods. But each one takes a couple of months of your life expectancy.

Deep fried pizza is so greasy but after a certain amount of beers it hits the spot.

The haggis is tasty but I always found it wreaked havoc on my guts.

You can tell how solidly the middle class the board is , only the Finlay's & Farquhar's of Bearsden & Morningside call it 'Deep fried Pizza ' - to everyone else , its Pizza Crunch

One of my work colleague's signature dish is mac/cheese made with a mixture of extra mature cheddar and red Leicester cheese, and in it is a mixture of mushrooms, Lincolnshire sausages and black sausage.

Sounds like it should be horrible, but everyone who eats it raves over it - including my wife who won't normally eat mushrooms.

No no no no no.

Pizza crunch is battered. Deep fried pizza is straight into the oil.

At least that's my understanding, given to me by an Italian Scots ex whose dad had a chippie in Dundeh

I was in a pub watching rugby here once and a woman near me caught my accent and we got talking because she’d been at Uni in St Andrews.
She said that she and a friend were in Dundee one Saturday and decided to go for a pint, this was early 80s.
They went into what she described as being a “down beat looking” place.
A couple of old guys were playing draughts, the racing was on the telly.

They were refused pints, but allowed half pints of lager.
When they went to sit down they were directed to a little snug round from the main bar and when they were seated the barman drew a curtain, keeping them separated from the room.

They were shrieking by this point.

I think they just stayed for the one

The visiting exhibitions are excellent - been to an Ocean Liners one which had all the artworks and design of the 1920s Liners and was beautifully presented, and a Mary Quant one which I got tickets as a gift for the missus but was unexpectedly fascinating.

Gift shop is an outrageous ripoff but expect they're just going with V&A Kensington prices.

I've been through the discovery museum but wasn't aware they offered a tour, might give that another go. Different breed, those boys. 'There's a water distiller but it's for the boilers, the sailors wouldn't drink it'.
