The best commentary I heard was a good few years ago at Wimbledon when they just let McEnroe and Becker get on with it for a couple of sets. Was absolutely brilliant

Can we say 100% of the last iteration of the channel 9 cricket commentary team.

Did recently see video from cwc final which showed the commentary box and the highlights, refound my respect for smithy, the guy was feeling every moment and providing only slightly biased comments
Ugh. Why was I so drawn into that. I'm not even that into cricket. Watched that horribly drawn out game only to see NZ lose, then had about 4.5 hours sleep and went to bed, hungover, on a Monday.

It was almost like being a parent.

Worst for me by a long way: Ken Laban and Willie Lose. Karl TeNana is getting better, and actually, while Marshall can be OTT, he also predicts some set plays very well.

"You don't like to see hookers going down on players like that."
"He's looking for some meaningful penetration into the backline."
"Spencer's running across field calling out, come inside me, come
inside me."
"I can tell you it's a magnificent sensation when the gap opens up like that
and you just burst right through."
"I don't like this new law, because your first instinct when you see a man
on the ground is to go down on him"
"Darryl Gibson has been quite magnificent coming inside Andrew Mehrtens, and
I'm looking forward to seeing more of the same today."
"There's nothing that a tight forward likes more than a loosie right up his
backside"
"Everybody knows that I have been pumping Martin Leslie for a couple of
seasons now."
This is definitely the first time I've ever seen those quotes. Definitely.

There are very few South African commentators I enjoy. They always seem to avoid any form of negative commentary or criticism, probably to avoid any offence which could come back to haunt them. So instead we've got this unbalanced, watered down "everything is fine, all our players are great" narrative that pisses me off.

Wim Visser and Butch James. Butch to his credit has improved and no longer talks like a Maritzburg College Matric. Wim Visser mixing his idioms and metaphors is hilariously bad.

Best for rugby is Jean Abeilhou
Unfortunately he is superseded by utter idiots on the big games: Lartot.
Clémentine Sarlat is good as is Cécile Grès.

Can't comment on Canal+ as I do not on principle pay to fund a xenophobic propaganda group (they have gone from liberal to pushing far right agenda).

TF1 has the World cup but no sport commentators left :/

Is there one commentator anywhere.. that everyone likes?

Apart from Bill McLaren?

Eddie Butler keeping below the radar then. I thought in the end Bill McL had become a bit of a parody of himself - if I heard “dancing in the streets of Llanelli tonight” once more I was going to scream.
As regards bias, well it doesn’t affect what happens on the pitch.

Yeah he is crap. I think Paterson and Lawson have made decent fists of it when in the commentary box.

It’s a good few years back, but the BBC had a go at using Mickey Skinner as a rugby pundit. Lordy, that was embarrassing. He was clearly going for the ‘bit of a character’ schtick and it was painful.

Not that Sid Waddell was really commenting on a sport, and there was always something a bit contrived about his darts bon mots, but I doubt there’s ever been anyone close (leaving out pro-wrestling as an irrelevance).

BBC rugby pundits are generally poor, you get the impression that they watch literally no rugby apart from the 6 Nations. I have a lot of time for Brian Moore as as co-commentator though, he obviously has a bias towards England but he is still generally fair.

I like Moore too and if he has a bias towards England it shows as a frustration when they aren’t playing well, he takes that frustration out on the England team, rather than blaming external factors like the ref or the opposition.

For me Benjamin Kayser is a very good pundit, he knows his stuff and is eloquent with it.

Ben Kay really annoys me. He gets so much wrong which then reveals itself during replays when he will either not correct his earlier analysis or worse, post-rationalise and make out that what he said originally is actually what happened but in a completely different way to the way he originally described it.

Ugo Monye is clearly the worst of all time though, but he's as woke as a Shoreditch skinny latte and clearly flavour of the month in TV land at the moment.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Sam Warburton's punditry, generally worth a listen and he's quite a likeable chap.

Not sure what he'd be like in the Jiffy role, not sure I've ever heard him do the colour commentary bit, but surely he'd be an improvement.

The BT pundits are quite a mixed bag, but I do like Healey as he does try to draw attention to things that the live camera can't show.

Jiffy isn't as bad as he once was, he must have been told to tone it down, the nadir was when he was laughing loudly at the the Italian team's mistakes, openly mocking them. Prick.

My favourite Jiffy moment came when he uttered one of his inanities and obviously Andrew Cotter wasn't impressed. Jiffy says, "Don't you raise your eyebrows at me Cotter"

To which AC replied, "I was just trying to feign interest"

Jiffy just cannot help himself, might as well give him some pompoms and send him out front.

I recall the Wales-England match where Daly scored a late try to win, a few phases before Liam Williams had just casually picked the ball up when flat on his arse in a ruck and Jiffy's only comment was 'great turnover'. It was about as textbook definition of off your feet, yellow card and penalty as you'll see. We don't really need fanboys in the commentary, the point of having local pundits is they'll bring a bit of local knowledge and colour.

That exchange suggests that Davies is one of those "don't you know who I am" rugby wankers, aka 'The JPR Complex'.

I see Victor Matfield has apologies for criticising Damien Willemse a couple of weeks ago.

Therein lies the problem with South African commentators.
