I’m after some sage advice please guys
Thinking of coming down with the Mrs to twickenham to watch the Tonga match. Travelling from the midlands and wanted to avoid London traffic so would like a tube link to twickenham
Would like to stop overnight in a decent hotel in a nice area.
Anyone got any tips?

The Alexander Pope is a decent hotel in Twickenham. It's about a 10 minute walk from the station.

Richmond is a decent place for drinks and food, a bit of a stroll from Twickenham but pleasant and - quite usefully - on the tube (District line). Twickenham is mainline only and a pain in arseonmatchday unless you get in early and hang around late.
Twickenham on match day usually a bit mental, my brother has a flat not far Off church St and its a bit too busy. Not sure Tonga match will be sellout but still a lot of people in a glorified village.

Yeah, Richmond is a good call - they usually have free buses running back and forth to the stadium but it’s not that far to walk anyway.inactionman wrote: Thu Sep 30, 2021 8:02 pm Richmond is a decent place for drinks and food, a bit of a stroll from Twickenham but pleasant and - quite usefully - on the tube (District line). Stay a couple of tube stops away from Richmond and you wouldn’t even know a game had been going on that day if you want to get away from the crowds

Something else to consider is not just the tube from Richmond, also look at the overground line. I.e. on matchdays coming from Herts I take the Met Line to Finchley Road and change onto the overground where it's 30 mins to Richmond and I can get a pint and some food without being a sardine on the shitty trains from Waterloo or in the pubs round HQ. Then there's either shuttle buses/ 30 min walk/quick uber to the ground depending on your preference.

Vaguely on topic but I'm assuming Tonga sales haven't been amazing given I've had four emails about buying tickets (I'm going)...

I actually enjoy the sardine on the train, it's usually buzzing and part of the match day atmosphere for me. Also it's a pretty quick journey.Paddington Bear wrote: Fri Oct 01, 2021 8:04 am Something else to consider is not just the tube from Richmond, also look at the overground line. If you are going by tube to the game anyway, no point necessarily staying in Twickers. Landahn is your oyster.Random1 wrote: Thu Sep 30, 2021 6:35 pm I’m after some sage advice please guys

Each to their own! I don't enjoy the massive queue to get out of Twickenham station either, Richmond has the great advantage for me of in the time it might take me to get half way over the railway bridge at Twickers I've already ordered a round.eldanielfire wrote: Fri Oct 01, 2021 10:20 amI actually enjoy the sardine on the train, it's usually buzzing and part of the match day atmosphere for me. This is literally the worst piece of advice I’ve seen on NPR.assfly wrote: Fri Oct 01, 2021 10:41 am Hounslow is a bit of a shithole, but it's surprisingly close to the stadium and has a couple of hotels that are half-decent. Good rail and tube links too.

I actually have more issue with the queue getting back to the station after the game. Going to it, I'm buzzing and excited and usually go early enough for a few pints before it goes mental on the trains.Paddington Bear wrote: Fri Oct 01, 2021 10:42 amEach to their own! I wouldnt worry too much about queues for the trains after the Samoa game, RFU cant give away tickets for that game.

The best way of getting around queues either side of the game is having a mate who lives between the stadium and the station, who isn't into rugby but doesn't mind providing lunch/ dinner for however many people are attending.
Hope this helps
(But yes, richmond is better than Twickenham)

I'd not recommend staying there, but Hounslow does have a good and cheap tube station car park (forget which one of the 3 has the car park) as well as a fair old bit of parking in the housing estates around it (park at own risk) and is easy to get to from the M25, so if you're driving in and want to ditch the car it's a good place to leave it.assfly wrote: Fri Oct 01, 2021 10:41 am Hounslow is a bit of a shithole, but it's surprisingly close to the stadium and has a couple of hotels that are half-decent. As assfly says, it's only few stations from Twickenham and you'll be going the other way to many who are coming out from central London.
I've used it when I've needed to drive into London and be away quickly - otherwise driving to London is a complete pain in harris. I used to live in Bath so would be coming in from the west so it was easy to get to.

I've taken the tube to Hounslow East before and either got the shuttle bus or walked.
Relatively simple and quick and you avoid the Twickenham Station queues. Also very convenient if you're coming from anywhere north
