.... but not really.

They've just re-branded as "Meta"

Presumably someone else had already nabbed the cunts.com domain name; so they couldn't re-brand to something accurate.

Is that the holding company name changing? Or they rebranding Facebook site/platform to meta?

If it’s just the holding company then not a big deal. It’s like google being owned by alphabet.

But if it’s the platform. Why? What a total expensive waste of time.

Facebook is planning to hire 10,000 people in the European Union to develop a so-called metaverse.

Investing in the EU offered many advantages, including access to a large consumer market, first-class universities and high-quality talent, Facebook said.

Only the holding company.

This is the same as Google rebranding their holding company as alphabet but I do wish this was the end of Facebook not being on them for a couple of years now and it's been a godsend, it's almost as cathartic as not being on PR.

Facebook have been hoovering up a lot of people from where I work. They’re hiring pretty much anyone they can get their hands on. I’m not far off from lobbing my CV over their way. People are getting 30-40% bumps in salary which makes it hard to say no.

Yeah, I've gotten a few approaches from them & aws, directly & thru agents in the last year.

Hopefully those kids doing STEM will finally start to see some reward for not choosing an easy University course

Because most big organisations that rebrand do so in an attempt to dissociate from cumulative sins of the past:
- Abbey
- FCA
etc

Plus because they're all in on the "metaverse" being a thing and they want to be THE platform for it, which is fucking terrifying. Besides, the metaverse is one of those that I can see coming and go 'nope, nope, nooooope' - if it goes anything like Facebook envisage, it'll fuck society in the ear in a number of ways.

Anyway, this moment during the presentation made me do some sort of strangled laugh-scream:

What were you doing on there to get such a positive effect from no longer visiting the site?

My feed is literally just updates from bands and a couple of rugby pages I follow. Other than England team announcements Facebook causes zero stress in my life.

Windscale to Sellafield probably the most egregious (and least successful) example of this.

Facebook are a complete failure in regulation. The fact that they've been allowed to call themselves a technology company when they're a publishing company for so long is pretty poor for a start. Also there's no way they should have been allowed to buy Instagram and WhatsApp. Both are clear antitrust violations but waved through as the regulators don't understand their business. And now they're more powerful than any government so any attempt at regulation will fail.

Pretty sure it's the holding company only. It's most likely an attempt to get the stink of the Facebook product not to be associated with their other products like Instagram and WhatsApp (both of which have their own issues).

Facebook's announcement that it is changing its name to Meta has caused quite the stir in Israel where the word sounds like the Hebrew word for "dead".
