Endeavour is brilliant. The character arcs over the various series are excellent in the way they evolve slowly until you suddenly realise the character has evolved a long, long way without it being really obvious.FalseBayFC wrote: Fri Oct 15, 2021 4:01 amJust discovered Endeavour about young Detective Morse. Currently just done series 3 of Sex Education and have started series 3 of Brassic which in bonkers![]()
The first season which revolved around teenagers knowing fuck all about sex due to painfully deficient sex ed in schools was genuinely warm and funny with dialogue that felt authentic for the characters.
Season 2 felt increasingly like a series of badly written PSAs and the will they won't they with Maeve and Otis wasn't well done. The finale of the alien sex musical was absurd, they tried to act like the headmaster was awful for wanting to suppress it. Even the most progressive schools would baulk at putting on such a production.
Season 3 fell further into the deficiencies of 2. A particular low point was the conclusion of the Otis and Ruby storyline, very abrupt and under-written. The pantomime baddie new headmistresses was an awfully designed character. Ironically so given that they actually did a bang up job of adding extra dimensions to the previously 2D former headmaster. His son was one of the only other characters to get a worthwhile arc too.
2 and 3 have been pretty light on laughs as well.
I won't bother with the next one.
I didn’t even realise this was a thing until recently. Haven’t watched any as the early seasons don’t seem to be on iPlayer. Can they be found elsewhere?weegie01 wrote: Mon Oct 18, 2021 12:44 pmEndeavour is brilliant. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.
Currently half way through S3. Would have to agree it isn’t as good as it used to be. S1 was great, S2 was OK, S3 is a bit flat so far.sockwithaticket wrote: Mon Oct 18, 2021 6:23 pmI've been steadily going off it.mat the expat wrote: Sat Oct 16, 2021 3:03 amSex education is awesomeOpenside wrote: Thu Oct 14, 2021 5:27 pm

Didnt mind the finale, at least something of consequence finally fuckign happened. Plus they werent ladling on the pretentiously obscure identikit pop-culture references every 10 fucking seconds.
The show is chasing its own tail to comical extremes though and needs to be taken out the back and Kevorkianed .

I think a more fitting end would have been if chuck would have died after auto-asphyxiation during prison rape for entrapment.
But either way, the series should have ended. But they feebly wove in this new character out of the blue. And to be the main character.
The ending was dreadful with Chuck walking in declaring war on that chair, ffs!

I've given Foundation 5 episodes; & can now say that it's dog shit on a stick !
I don't know why they bothered paying the estate for rights to the story; to just fucking ignore it; & make a cross between the Borgias, & Waterworld.

Maybe with some prison-made ballgags etc. At least he would've died happy.
The devious machinations of Succession are almost getting too much. Women must LOVE this show, all the passive aggressive air-reading required in every supposedly diplomatic yet hatefully simmering conversation between the siblings. The deluded nature of their grandiose entitlement to just "take over from Amazon" despite being clueless, useless spoilt little shitheads is just so well done.

Opinions on Squid Game?
Not particularly deep and some of the stuff is pretty telegraphed but a decent watch all the same.

How can you like all three? I liked two of these... Curb Your Enthusiasm is as bad as Seinfeld... just not funny...Gumboot wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 11:36 pm I also enjoyed Squid Game. Not sure it warrants another season, though. Much like Killing Eve in that regard. Curb Your Enthusiasm's as good as ever.
I like a lot of that CYE, The Office, Peep Show sort of cringe comedy.Grandpa wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 12:08 amHow can you like all three? I liked two of these... I like cringe comedy too... all those you mention... just CYE no matter how much I watch, I never find anything funny... wish I knew why,... it's just cringe without the humour... but then I don't find Seinfeld funny either and that was a big show.Gumboot wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 1:05 amI like a lot of that CYE, The Office, Peep Show sort of cringe comedy.Grandpa wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 12:08 amHow can you like all three? Wish I'd quit watching Killing Eve after season 1.

I don’t get CYE either. Because we got Prime for the AIs we watched Nine Perfect Strangers - Nicole Kidman is a Russian former CEO who runs a retreat to "cure" people of modern life stresses and particularly damaged people are her speciality.
It's light, funny in parts and filmed in a beautiful location (Byron Bay as California) but has enough weight to keep the interest going.
We enjoyed it.

Am currently midway through season 5 of the wire. McNulty has turned into (more of) an alcoholic douche bag, Bunk is a bit part and Lester’s role seems massively off what he started as. Nowhere near as strong as the other seasons.
Would it be terribly infra dig to recommend a little gem from the wireless...?
Those of you familiar with Radio 4’s 18:30, er, ‘comedy’ slot will know it is largely a miss and really miss affair. The News Quiz used to be a giggle under Toksvig and then Jupp, but in its current incarnation it is vying with The Now Show for the title of unfunniest pile of sub-VIth Form ‘satirical’ shite to molest our airwaves.
John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme has, for 8 seasons, been a welcome rare gem in this slot – a sketch show which doesn’t rely either on characters/memes flogged to death, or indeed on painfully woke and agonisingly unfunny point scoring.
The 9th season is something different altogether. Each of the 6 episodes features a series of vignettes from a character’s life. It isn’t particularly funny and, at first, doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. But if you give it a go and listen to each of the 6 episodes in order (and without too much delay between each: this defo rewards a binge) something quite wonderful emerges.
Not sure how to classify this, as it’s not really comedy. It is, however, utterly unique and in my view a rare work of genius. If Tarantino, Altman and PT Anderson had a (genetically unlikely) very British, self-deprecating love child, and he was forced to work in radio, he’d come up with something like this.
Easily the most creative radio programme I've ever heard - and I'm a huge Blue Jam fan, so my bar is pretty ferkin high...
Give it a go – if you’re not hooked by the 3rd episode I’ll eat my hat, and it’s one of those f@ck-off hairy Russian numbers, so this is no idle promise…

Almost finished with it. It's very different to the usual stuff on TV these days, so for that reason alone I am enjoying it.Uncle fester wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 10:39 pm Opinions on Squid Game?

I quite liked the last series, it was suitably bleak and the the gangsters even more ruthless and cold-blooded - it was the way the arc was going anyway. The newsroom is apparently realistic.
It's not perfect, but I still thought it was good
It’s always been obvious. Dexter is a slow burn without twists. You always know what you’re getting. beside the shirts and Harrison the Dexter feeling is the same.
I think they made it a bit too obvious who was going to be his first victim.
I loved it. The whole hideousness of the family and nepotism. The extremely entitled kids. The corporate politics. The fear Logan generates is brilliant. It all seems nearly credible.
The whole cousin Greg and Tom thing is also excellent.

Too many annoying characters.. I think only the father (Brian Cox) and his daughter stopped me from binning it earlier...Ymx wrote: Fri Nov 12, 2021 10:02 pmI loved it.
