Killjoy.
I was surprised to have to provide chapter and verse in terms of ID and contact details to The Range when getting my cheap and nasty damp squib chinese fireworks. Assume it's to track antisocial users (if you concede there are social users) - given the amount they sell how the hell would they know whose is whose?

Yep, should be limited to licensed public events. Joe Bloggs shouldn't have the ability to set off half a dozen in his garden whenever he feels like.
Pet owners get to see firsthand how much animals are disturbed by it, what's left of our wildlife feels exactly the same without the benefit of owners on hand to soothe.

Think I'd have to agree now. If I went down to the hardware store and bought some sugar and weedkiller, I'd have some gentlemen on my doorstep wearing padded jackets. But buy a load of gunpowder and it's fine?

They've been going off more or less constantly since 17:30 for me. Sporadic bursts of a few, clearly not organised displays.

Yeah, covers a fair old area though, so I can well imagine us having very different experiences. I'm pretty close to Haslemere.Ymx wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 9:27 pmVery little for me. Does any other country celebrate the most horrific execution imaginable, of a human being ?
Maybe if instead of the jolly, "Penny for the Guy"; kids went around with a barrow full of pig intestines, & various body parts; the British might think again ? .... but I don't hold out much hope.

I find it bizarre that a nation can celebrate someone being; ritually tortured; & given the most excruciating death imaginable .... & then turn it into a fucking holiday.Slick wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 10:25 pmfishfoodie wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 10:23 pm Does any other country celebrate the most horrific execution imaginable, of a human being ?

Should Saudi turn 7/7, or the Manchester Arena bombing into a holiday ?
with kids running around in suicide vests; that when they pull the detonator; set off fireworks ?
would that be tasteless; or just a celebration ?

Anyway, it started as a celebration of Parliament not being blown up, not a celebration of inventive ways to kill people.

Seriously, have a word with yourself. Comparing a fun bit of tradition from an event over 400 years ago to kids being slaughtered at a music concert a few years back. FFS. Christians don't exactly celebrate the crucifixion; they remember it; & then three days later they celebrate the resurrection.Slick wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 10:25 pmfishfoodie wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 10:23 pm Does any other country celebrate the most horrific execution imaginable, of a human being ?

Guy Fawkes Day was a big deal when I was a small kid, with public bonfires and fireworks starting chimney fires. Even later, I remember friends telling me about the epic skyrocket battles they had with other student flats in Dunedin.
But I think the whole Americanised Halloween thing possibly stole its thunder...along with the growing awareness of the dangers of fireworks, of course. Suits me - after living in Taiwan for so long, I couldn't care less if I never see or hear another firework in my life.

The key in those Dunedin flat battles was getting hold of the aluminium crutches. Take the rubber stopper off and you had a fairly accurate launcher. We managed to get a few into the front doors or windows of Clyde Street with that technique.Gumboot wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 11:48 pm Guy Fawkes Day was a big deal when I was a small kid, with public bonfires and fireworks starting chimney fires. I am a firm believer that dogs should not be allowed in cities and towns anyway. Keep them in the farms and working. If they are too small, don't breed them.yermum wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 7:33 pm my poor dogs are shivering wrecks at this time of year in the evenings.
Those bloody things bark for 364 days a year because they are bored and cooped up - One day a year they are snivelling and shivering. Cry me a river.
I drink and I forget things.

Having grown up working on farms and now been living in a city for 25 years, there isn't an epidemic of barking, one eye open cooped up loon dogs.
Dogs provide a great deal of companionship and I'm wary of proscribing things like dog ownership.
The worst treatment I saw of dogs was by self-proclaimed "stockmen".
They had no fucking idea.

Yeah I don’t think the rest of society should have to cater for dog owners. Bonfire Night is a remarkably ancient tradition, and I’d have far more sympathy for the people screeching on facebook about their dog if my walks in the woods weren’t regularly interrupted by mastiffs/dobermans etc off their lead and jumping up at me.

We've had a few round our way this year. Diwali is well celebrated by some families where I stay and lots of kids so many houses have their own wee fireworks show.Globus wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 12:49 pm Not many about these days, it seems.
I've known this vicar for many years. I had a bit of a run in with a son of a well known politician.
Much happening in your neck of the woods?

Thankfully my dog isn't too bothered by them at all to the point we can go for a walk during the fireworks going off.
Well, every Christian one celebrated Good Friday and Easter.fishfoodie wrote: Fri Nov 05, 2021 10:23 pm Does any other country celebrate the most horrific execution imaginable, of a human being ?

And many countries celebrate revolutions which were pretty bloody.

It's not just dogs that get terrified by fireworks. Fireworks per se aren't the problem, it's the freedom of just anyone to light them up whenever they feel like it.Paddington Bear wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 8:20 am Yeah I don’t think the rest of society should have to cater for dog owners. Given the preponderance of shittty dog owners I'm also in favour of bringing back needing a license to own one and being limited to how many an individual can possess,

Yeah, licensing has really done away with cars hasn't it. Never see them around.Biffer wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 9:47 am So no fireworks, no dogs.

Abomination, should be banned.

Mind you, I hope no one tells him about bonfire night in Lewes.
What is this teaching our kids?
Even once the torture was over, Fawkes still had to meet a grisly end.
After his confession, he was to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. However, Fawkes leapt from the gallows before he could be hanged. The fall broke his neck and, according to the BBC, saved him from being disemboweled while still alive.
His remains were cut up and sent to the four corners of the kingdom as a warning to future plotters.
Shouldn’t we be celebrating by throwing a catholic dummy from a height to the ground, then cutting it in to pieces, rather than burning it in a bonfire.

It would have been the 9/11 of it’s day and likely not even had it’s desired effect, hard to get too teary eyed for him.
