R1m up for grabs in Cheetahs ‘rugby bonanza’
The Cheetahs will compete in the Toyota Challenge, new competition that includes the Sharks, Stormers and two overseas teams.
During a virtual media briefing on Friday to announce a new “rugby bonanza”, Cheetahs managing director Harold Verster unveiled the Toyota Challenge, a tournament which will take place in Bloemfontein from 13 to 26 November.
The two foreign club sides will come from Spain and Romania.
The tournament came to fruition after the Cheetahs challenged the Sharks, Stormers, Spanish club Diables Barcelona and Romanian outfit CSM Stiinta Baia Mare to compete in a series of matches.
Five teams will participate in the four-match Challenge with the winners of each set to bank R250 000 in prize money.
Additionally, players will be rewarded for “positive play actions” during the games, while fans will be rewarded for supporting their favorite teams in the stadium and online on various social media platforms.
Commenting on the new competition, Verster said:“Apart from dishing up running rugby against the old foes in the Stormers and the Sharks, the Cheetahs are excited to have two new rugby friends Diables Barcelona and CSM Stiinta Baia Mare in Toyota Stadium.

The kids team play in the CC final and will be nice if some of them get opportunities. Perfect tournament to get Kade Wolhuter back in shape.Sandstorm wrote: Fri Oct 22, 2021 7:09 pm Could be lame or could be fun and interesting for the fans. I’m happy to give it a chance until the Stomps put out a kids team and get pumped.

One of the new Danie Gerbers that were announced every year. He did have a good overseas career though and must have made some great coin. Him and his brother were hailed as the second coming. Johann Sadie was another new Danie Gerber. Still playing in France I believe. Jan Serfontein another one. Overhyped and overrated. Scored something like 12 tries in 80 games in France.Chilli wrote: Fri Nov 12, 2021 4:07 amRobert Ebersohn?OomStruisbaai wrote: Fri Nov 12, 2021 3:49 am Cheetahs – 15 Cohen Jasper, 14 Daniel Kasende, 13 David Brits, 12 Robert Ebersohn, 11 Rosko Specman, 10 Siyabonga Masuku, 9 Tian Meyer, 8 Aidon Davis (c), 7 Thembelani Bholi, 6 Gideon van der Merwe, 5 Rynier Bernardo, 4 Victor Sekekete, 3 Jacobus van Vuuren, 2 Wilmar Arnoldi, 1 Aluluthu Tshakweni.

Ebersohn is a very good centre so is Serfontein. Doubt they are Gerber quality but Gerber was a once in a lifetime player. It's counter productive to compare players from different eras anyways. The game has changed to much.

Agreed. I was referring to the press that at the time would herald each of these centres as the new Danie Gerber.average joe wrote: Fri Nov 12, 2021 6:27 am Ebersohn is a very good centre so is Serfontein. Fassi being bracketed with Kockott and Bosch is a bit much imo. He has already moved beyond. He's the most lacerating runner in SA since Pieter Rossouw. He'll be better than Habana because he's more imaginative and adventurous.
He is the white Slaptjips!

Slaptjips never made Paarl Gim first XV.
My oldest son got his Paarl Gim school jacket. Bought it from his parents in Malmesbury.

Muskiet (Tristan Leyds) was impressive in both that tries. Putting Senatla in space.
He got 2 gimme tries. All he had to do was catch the ball and not drop it as he was crossing the line.
All the hard work was already done.
Leyds had a good showing yes, but this is his level. Can't see him being a threat at URC level or higher.

That was just the tries. Dobson doing a great job. Giving 9 u20s a chance plus getting his Springbok back. Think only Kitshoff will get a break, Malherbe also back in January.Blake wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 10:54 amHe got 2 gimme tries. ACTION-PACKED MATCH DAY FOR THE FANS
The Toyota Challenge is a new kind of rugby tournament: one where every victory earns a prize of R250 000 and where players will do everything in their power to win cash bonuses for explosive play.
Players making the most tackles, line breaks and turnovers on the ground win cash prizes.
“The Player of the match” will win R10 000 for every match while the supporter who posts the most social media posts during the match with hashtag #ToyotaLegendSupport will win R10 000 and be crowned “Supporter of the match”!
Regulations, as prescribed by the Department of Cooperative Governance and SA Rugby’s “Guidelines for the return of spectators to sport events”, limit spectator numbers in the stadium to 2 000.
Gates open at 16:30 and spectators are urged to come early and to note that the following has to be presented to gain entrance to the Toyota Stadium on a matchday:
