I've gone down a rabbit hole of old clips of his since I heard. Proper comedy legend.

Amongst the tributes I found out that he was the waiter in the 4 yorkshireman sketch.

I knew he was pretty old and whenever I listened to him I always thought “Please hang around a bit longer”, I just loved his style of comedy.

I was going to say John Otto Cleese but that’s going back to ISIRTA in the 1960s.

From the obit on The BBC site

Cryer, the master of the comedy sketch and the instant one-liner, was once asked by the Yorkshire Post for his favourite joke. He recalled one he had told in a student revue in 1955.
"A man drives down a country lane and runs over a cockerel. He knocks at a nearby farmhouse door and a woman answers.
"'I appear to have killed your cockerel,' he says. 'I'd like to replace it.' The woman replies: 'Please yourself - the hens are round the back.'"

Very sad news. I saw him in a live performance in my local town back in 2017, he was very sharp, did quite a lot of musical numbers which surprised me. One of the few comedians who straddled multiple eras, he wasn't politically correct or politically incorrect, he was just funny.
