About time we fired a shot. Try for Tom Willis, just reward for his tireless and effective carrying.

WTF is wrong with Wasps? On paper, they should be well in with a chance of winning a game where Quins are devoid of so many key players.sockwithaticket wrote: Sat Feb 19, 2022 4:26 pm About time we fired a shot. Try for Tom Willis, just reward for his tireless and effective carrying.

They're not really missing any more key men than we are. Players like the Willis brothers are making their first appearance after injury.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Sat Feb 19, 2022 4:34 pmWTF is wrong with Wasps? We're also just not playing very well and were a little fortunate to win our last two games.

Salvaging a losing bonus point wasn't too bad a result given the way the game went.
I guess a BP away to Quins isn't a bad result - but it's pushed us back quite a bit in the table. Looks like 9 sides chasing the 8 HEC cup places in table where it seems almost anyone can beat anyone else. And most of the chasing pack, behind Sarries and Leicester, also have a chance of making the play offs, with just 7 points covering 3rd to 9th. Just takes one side to go on an decent unbeaten run. Wasps had their chance today but it wasn't to be.sockwithaticket wrote: Sat Feb 19, 2022 4:54 pm Salvaging a losing bonus point wasn't too bad a result given the way the game went.
Nonetheless, great to see the Willis brothers back playing. We'll probably get Barbeary back next week When Jones cuts him from the squad again.
MIKE BROWN: Not even one Wales player would make England’s XV... their team isn’t anywhere near the quality of some of their recent line-ups and Eddie Jones' side should beat them comfortably

Just turned on - Steve Black dead? RIP

Is there even the remotest, slimmest, possibility that Eddie wil start Randal against Wales ?
With Manu back at 12 it would be really nice to see what we could do with some quick ball. Their defence would be then be held by the threats of sniping from Randall, the power of Manu and the jinking running of Smith - could open up some space outside for Slade and the wings. But, put Youngs in there and it becomes much slower and easier for them read. It'd also be good to see Steward come into the line and provide the extra man when we attack.

Manu mitigates a lot of Youngs’ biggest issues as he can still break the line off slow ball.

Yep, no doubt about it and staggered Ridley didn’t want to look at first.
Hard to criticise the rugby in these conditions but bizarre end to the half with Newcastle kicking it off 40m out. At least try a garryowen.

I know we don't want a second red, but I don't see how that's fucntionally much different. He doesn't appreciably lower his height to make the tackle. If 13 were a couple of inches taller that would look a lot worse.

Very hard to see the red that was given as anything else, he’s gone in high with no reason to. Just don’t do it - he’d have smashed his ribs if he’d made any effortKawazaki wrote: Sun Feb 20, 2022 4:11 pm A red card is just far too harsh a sanction for non-malicious or cynical offences. Maybe there needs to be a third colour between yellow and red.

It was brainless, he was running in from miles away, had loads of time to get his positioning right. He wanted a showreel hit, he got one, for all the wrong reasons.Paddington Bear wrote: Sun Feb 20, 2022 4:20 pmVery hard to see the red that was given as anything else, he’s gone in high with no reason to. Just gonna stick this here:
My club vs 2nd in the league I believe. I'm not playing, but you can briefly see me in the background on occasion, and hear me I think. Why they feel the need to film their games I'm not sure, but have to admit it's fun, and it's nice that it's been edited down.
Ref was very good for the level, too good (he could keep up), and will likely be moving up soon enough.
EDIT - It also includes a penalty kicked from our 5m line, and bouncing out at around about their 5m line!

Thought it was only French clubs who had no idea how to play v 14. Prime example was Toulouse yesterday who were beaten by 13 man Pau: Manu sent off after 32 and Vatubua after 50. Yes, they lost to a side playing with 13 men for 30 minutes.Paddington Bear wrote: Sun Feb 20, 2022 4:44 pm Any danger of a plan B Exeter? Superb fight from Newcastle

After the Wasps game, we need to see Toulouse against 12 men in order to determine if they can adapt their game plan.

Dean Richards' post-match comments were a disgrace. Accused the officials of either showing favouritism or not knowing what they were doing and one of his main examples was arguing that the Hodge incident shouldn't have been a red.
I don't catch Falcons very often, but when I do i feel like he's always moaning about the officiating. Here's an idea, Dean: be better. Newcastle are a poor team and they have been for ages, that one season they made a run to the playoffs out of nowhere looks more and more anamalous. Without that, their record of basement dwelling is on a par with Worcester's and actually features one more relegation in the last decade.

I don't agree with him about the red card but he's right about the line out. Players are being pinged for jumping across but that's because they're going for balls that aren't being thrown straight. Referees seem to have given up on a straight feed as they did with scrums.
Yer man needs to get some elevation!Raggs wrote: Sun Feb 20, 2022 5:33 pm Just gonna stick this here:

One of his other examples was that how can you be penalised for jumping across the line when the throw in isn't straight. There is also an arguement that Ridley was favouring Chiefs at scrum time, there were a couple of later resets that had it been the Falcons front row going up or the prop going full onto his stomach because he was long legged it would have been a penalty to Chiefs and not merely a reset.sockwithaticket wrote: Sun Feb 20, 2022 7:42 pm Dean Richards' post-match comments were a disgrace. I disagree with his view that the red card was harsh, it was as certain a red as you will see and unfortunately Richards has form for this sort of whinging post defeat and its been annoying the locals for a number of seasons now.
Falcons personality as a team probably reflects the DORs attitude to the game, the season we did reach the playoffs we managed to add a decent attacking edge to the gritty arm wrestle defence, however with probably the smallest budget in the league and an apparent long term neglect to the academy in the past (thankfully that appears to have been addressed in the last few years) we cannot afford to sign top level players or even retain the ones that we pick up as a bit of a bargain as they are easy picking for richer clubs. This then manifests into the fluctuation of performance levels and results and as the club fails to kick on leads to the better players leaving and the circle starting again.

There is, but every team has played in games where it feels like the opposition are getting all the calls and the officials are favouring them, yet it is, thankfully, incredibly rare for a DoR or coach to be as forthright in their criticism as Richards was.FalconJock wrote: Mon Feb 21, 2022 8:25 amOne of his other examples was that how can you be penalised for jumping across the line when the throw in isn't straight. Newcastle could have won that game if they'd played more intelligent rugby. Lost count of the amount of times they kicked it out on the full, they gave up on an attack 40m out before half time when they could have done something speculative etc. Ridley isn't the greatest ref in the world but I didn't switch off the TV as a neutral who wanted Newcastle to win thinking they'd been robbed.
