We're probably closer to nuclear war now than at any point in the lives of most of us.
How would you feel about turning on the television and hearing that nukes were on their way to your locale?

If you could organise that to happen the day of my next trip to the dentist that would be fantastic

Once upon a time you'd try and have sex in the last remaining minutes - now everyone would rush out to buy toilet rolls
There's massive support from South Africans for Russia. Cheerleaders wishing for the Great Ruskies to destroy the evil colonial West. It would appear that South Africa will not be affected by a nuclear holocaust. So I am good thanks. We will remember you lot fondly
While it seems a bit drastic, on the upside, it would end speculation about your lot joining the 6N.Sards wrote: Wed Mar 09, 2022 12:00 pm There's massive support from South Africans for Russia. 2/10 Would Not Bomb
Being of the older generation it is not new. With about 15 minutes from launch to the UK there is not a lot you can actually do about it.Ethologist wrote: Wed Mar 09, 2022 11:45 am We're probably closer to nuclear war now than at any point in the lives of most of us.

Perhaps it’s because we get to hear more about it but it seems more dangerous now, if only because Putin’s rationality is questionable.westport wrote: Wed Mar 09, 2022 3:10 pmBeing of the older generation it is not new. Although I remember being in the school playground at the time of the Cuban Missile crisis and wondering where the aircraft overhead were going to or coming from.
Because the international "liberal, rules based order" is neo colonial. It benefits a small number of mostly white nations in the west (which constitutes about 10% of the worlds population ) and leaves mostly everyone else as second class global citizens.Sards wrote: Wed Mar 09, 2022 12:00 pm There's massive support from South Africans for Russia. Its why Imran Khan pushed back on western attempts to force Pakistan to take a side in the conflict, the west still treats folks in the developing world as colonial subjects that should do as they are told.
Its been one of the major principles of the BLM movement that white people benefit from the status quo and whether they are racist or not they want to uphold it.
The arrogance of the west is astonishing but I guess it has been normalised through centuries of colonialism. The world simply has to bend to the whims of the west because it was ever thus.
Reading this recently reminded me that there have been well-meaning people in place to go "Hold on just a minute..."

It's quite the thing to imagine the states of mind of a large number of people who'd be able to go "Right, let's end this thing."
(Vancouver Island might need Van or Seattle to get hit, with atypical wind shifts to push whatever our way, so guess this could be a safe-haven colony for a bit?

You can build a shelter out of bog roll, right?

That's why you always keep the inner when the paper runs out. Not only a key structural element in any shelter, they can also double as a sighting / launching component if home built weapons are needed later.Margin__Walker wrote: Wed Mar 09, 2022 7:30 pmThat reminds me to stock up. I remember as a young kid being terrified of full Nuke war in the 80’s. Is that the full 100MT one, or the downrated 50MT one they tested ?

That's more like it

although, I doubt the accuracy when you get to those kind of yields, as the blast is so large, that it is both hitting the ground, & also punching thru the troposphere, so some of the energy is actually effectively going out to space. It's why such large weapons are just dick waving exercises.
If you want to destroy a country; 100x 1MT is better than 1x 100MT; anything bigger than 250kt is really just tiny-dick-syndrome
Would be curious how they announce it.
Would most be the personal touch, or some go for a more general, Soylent Green kind of one?

Those of you talking about wind patterns and where you'd be in the event of explosions really need to read this. Radiation isn't the problem. You will strave to death and so will pretty much everyone you know. Wherever you are in the world.
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?

I remember a (possibly apocryphal) report in the early 80s about an American family who were terrified by the prospect of nuclear war and, to ensure their safety, worked out where on the planet would be least likely to be hit by nuclear weapons.Ymx wrote: Wed Mar 09, 2022 8:04 pmI remember as a young kid being terrified of full Nuke war in the 80’s. Having done so they moved to the Falkland Islands a few months before the Falklands war broke out.
