One thing that I think will happen is less South African players will go to England and France due to the new eligibility rules in France and England and the Salary Cap in England. It already appears that there is a movement back to South Africa or Japan.

I didn't realise what that Lood had to pay to buy himself out of his contract. He must be desperate to leave. I have read that he wants to move back to South Africa for family reasons but the money in Japan may be too much.

I think that going to England has made them into MUCH better players in that they are less bash it up and rely on more skill.

I'd love to see them play for the Cheetahs and Boks!

I also think that the above rule changes and the 5 year rule has made Rassie much more relaxed about blooding new Boks as they are less likely to play abroad or be poached.

That was an oooold record.

Don’t think of myself as a runner, but doing the Outeniqua half end of the month and entered Cape Town marathon, depending on how it goes toying with perhaps a Two Oceans next year. Bit of a personal challenge following a serious knee injury.

SorCrer has been quiet lately and I suspect Oom Fangle lost his battle with melanoma. He was quite ill the last time he posted.

Myself wanted to put it back in the water but my laaitie (study nature conserarvation) told me to rather phone our local NSRI to find out about their rehabilitation. So we need to take it to their station and they transfer them to the two oceans aquarium for rehabilitation. They are nested in Northern KZN and the Agulhas Current drive them all the way down to the south coast.

England and Great Britain Hockey are delighted to confirm the appointment of Paul Revington as Head Coach of the England and Great Britain men’s teams.

Paul is a former FIH World Coach of the Year and joins from Malaysia Hockey, where he was Technical Director. Prior to that he was Head Coach of the Great Britain women’s Elite Development Programme, then Assistant Coach of the England and Great Britain senior women’s teams.

Before that Paul was Malaysia’s men’s head coach; leading Ireland’s senior men prior to that and taking his native South Africa to the Olympics in 2004 as head coach.

Paul said: “I feel privileged to be afforded the opportunity to lead the Great Britain and England Men’s Teams in their next chapter of international hockey.

“I started my involvement in hockey at the time when England and Great Britain won World Cup and Olympic medals respectively in 86 and 88, then I was able to witness first-hand the men’s resurgence from 2006, and I enjoyed a wonderful three years coaching in the women’s program at Bisham Abbey during the successful Tokyo cycle - so I’ve developed a good understanding and feel for how Great Britain and England Hockey lives and breathes.

“Our coaching and management team enters an environment filled with opportunities. A national club league showing exciting growth potential, a healthy pool of athletes thanks to a successful Great Britain EDP programme; a squad containing a competitive mix of youth and experience and a national team having taken positive strides forward in the Tokyo cycle. Added to this is an exciting time for all three Home Nations as they look to excel over the coming months and compete at international events including Commonwealth Games and World Cup.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the Malaysian Hockey Confederation and would like to thank everyone there for their hard work, support and generosity. This is a fantastic opportunity for me and it is now the task of our coaching team to follow in the footsteps of several outstanding Head Coaches and lead another talented group of athletes on an action-packed journey of continual improvement, hard work and inspiring a nation through consistent elite performance.”

The appointment panel included representatives from England and Great Britain Hockey, Catriona Semple and Kate Baker of UK Sport, former England Rugby head coach Stuart Lancaster and former international hockey players. Ed continued: “The panel have every confidence in Paul and know that he will maximise all the skills and strengths of the squad (both individually and collectively) and of the full staff team in the coming months and years.”

I go for walks on Noordhoek Long beach. After a storm with big waves there are often dead baby fur seals washed up. The population is getting too big for the fish stocks and the pups are often malnourished.

Was small. Fit in my hand. Laid upside down and couldn't get back in the water. The woman at NSRI told us 5 washed ashore that day. They clean them and transport them to Cape Town. A year back I found a big one near Struisbaai Plaat. Also transported to 2 Oceans.

Happy Freedom Day Saffers! 28 years of democracy. Where did you all cast your votes on the historic day in 1994? I voted at Hillcrest High School. Did so after an all-nighter party with ex-varsity chums. An amazing atmosphere.

Was in matric and had just turned 18 so could work for IEC at my local polling station (Heidelberg Town Hall) Experiencing the elections, not just as a first time voter, but from (somewhat) behind the scenes was extremely humbling. The humanity of people who typically had never been equals in a social situation standing in line patiently waiting to vote to a large extent shaped my view of the innate goodness of people.

It later transpired that for some the humanity is only but a veneer.

I was in primary school in Zim. Didn't have a clue what was going on, until my teacher burst into tears of happiness when she was trying to explain it to us. I still remember her telling us that although we were young, we must remember this day for the rest of our lives. It has stuck with me ever since.
