70 years doing the same job, same employer. That's quite an achievement.
They should at least give her a gold watch. And of course a card signed by all the other employees of the company.
Just please don't get a person from HR to do the presentation - that's always cringy AF.

Live in a very Tory constituency, so there's a fair bit going on. Won't be attending any of it, just going to enjoy an extra couple of days off doing things I would usually do with free time.
So its him who's responsible for all those anonymous phone calls she keeps getting.

A good innings. We have a street party Sunday, good chance to meet the neighbours at least.

I'm pretty sure Thursday and Friday aren't age-restricted bank holidays. Even if they were, under this government, it wouldn't be my age group and younger being favoured...shaggy wrote: Mon May 30, 2022 4:15 pmTime off? A couple of houses on local roads have put up life size cardboard cutouts of the queen waving from their windows…
I nearly crashed the car.

There's a funeral directors round the corner from me, for some reason they have chosen to stick a cardboard cutout of Liz not in the window, but slightly inside the shop, so she looks as though she's popped in to sort out a funeral plan.

I'm on braai duty, zero fucks for the reason, other than being neighbourly.
I'm looking forward scowling at them when they bring over their frozen vegan 'burger' patties and hot dog sausages to contaminate by Weber.

I don't work Fridays anyway so I've been cheated a day's holiday. That's about the extent of my interest.
If I were designing the UK from scratch it wouldn’t be a monarchy but it’s what we have and I’m conservative enough not to get too het up about it. Like most (?) people I have respect for HMTQ but I’m not bothered about the others so no bunting here.

Nothing, nada, SFA going on in my area .... thank god for that! I will be doing my best to miss all the sycophantic royalist shit on TV and radio, I just hate the crap being spouted forth mixed with the odd bit of xenophobic racism about the empire thrown in. I will be hiding on the golf course or in the gym.

Apparently my borough had the most applications for road closures during the long BH in the county. There is a small street very nearby closing their road and having a street party but not interested in it personally nor the jubilee thing in general and will be trying to ignore proceedings as best I can.
I live in a city named after gr--gr-grandma-ma and don't know of anything going on.
Likely will be some 'end the mandates' protestors at the Legislature, though, so maybe I'll wander down and get their take on her reign. Or maybe we'll get a good ruck between them and royalists?

Coming from NZ, where our constitutional arrangements are theoretically the same but completely different in practice, it's hard to work up any interest. The fact that our monarch is a foreign lady who lives overseas, and is substituted by an appointed official gives a bloodlessness and distance to the whole business that I quite like. It's no source of national pride, there's little attachment to the individual concerned; good.

I mean she bailed her sexually deviant son out, just so it wouldn't overshadow her Jubilee celebrations.
If that isn't enough to make you barf into your cornflakes, everytime we think of her, and the gawd awful monarchy, this other little ditti should be going through your heads.

The extent of the Queen and Prince Charles's secretive power of veto over new laws has been exposed after Downing Street lost its battle to keep information about its application secret.
Whitehall papers prepared by Cabinet Office lawyers show that overall at least 39 bills have been subject to the most senior royals' little-known power to consent to or block new laws. They also reveal the power has been used to torpedo proposed legislation relating to decisions about the country going to war.
The internal Whitehall pamphlet was only released following a court order and shows ministers and civil servants are obliged to consult the Queen and Prince Charles in greater detail and over more areas of legislation than was previously understood.

The new laws that were required to receive the seal of approval from the Queen or Prince Charles cover issues from higher education and paternity pay to identity cards and child maintenance.
In one instance the Queen completely vetoed the Military Actions Against Iraq Bill in 1999, a private member's bill that sought to transfer the power to authorise military strikes against Iraq from the monarch to parliament.
She was even asked to consent to the Civil Partnership Act 2004 because it contained a declaration about the validity of a civil partnership that would bind her.
In the pamphlet, the Parliamentary Counsel warns civil servants that if consent is not forthcoming there is a risk "a major plank of the bill must be removed".
"This is opening the eyes of those who believe the Queen only has a ceremonial role," said Andrew George, Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, which includes land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, the Prince of Wales' hereditary estate.
"It shows the royals are playing an active role in the democratic process and we need greater transparency in parliament so we can be fully appraised of whether these powers of influence and veto are really appropriate. At any stage this issue could come up and surprise us and we could find parliament is less powerful than we thought it was."
Yes, some sort of presidential system, which would of course require a totally new constitution including scrapping the HoL. RoI and Germany seem to have basically ceremonial presidents as head of state, which sounds ok to me.Random1 wrote: Tue May 31, 2022 10:09 pmWhat would you have out of interest?GogLais wrote: Tue May 31, 2022 9:20 am If I were designing the UK from scratch it wouldn’t be a monarchy but it’s what we have and I’m conservative enough not to get too het up about it. Yeah, I don’t see what value it adds if we just replace her maj with another politician, who’ll vie for votes.GogLais wrote: Wed Jun 01, 2022 12:19 pmYes, some sort of presidential system, which would of course require a totally new constitution including scrapping the HoL. Symbolically I get it - but I’ve a fear we’d be more likely to follow the American politicking presidents.
I can’t say I’ve thought it through that deeply but I’d want an apolitical head of state.Random1 wrote: Thu Jun 02, 2022 9:13 amYeah, I don’t see what value it adds if we just replace her maj with another politician, who’ll vie for votes.GogLais wrote: Wed Jun 01, 2022 12:19 pmYes, some sort of presidential system, which would of course require a totally new constitution including scrapping the HoL. Convenient dose of covid for the Nonce Prince Andrew this morning? Saves any debate about his presence on the balcony. Can't see any forgiveness for the nonce despite what the leader of the CoE thinks we should do, despite his Church failing to take child abuse claims seriously and which then created a culture where abusers were able to hide one of whom, Bishop Peter Ball, was a friend of royalty. I'm not sure when or where Archbishop Welby sought the views of victims - perhaps he spoke to a few choirboys?
Apart from anything else I thought you had to repent before being forgiven.dpedin wrote: Thu Jun 02, 2022 3:59 pm Convenient dose of covid for the Nonce Prince Andrew this morning? The Queen has decided not to go to St Paul's tomorrow after experiencing "discomfort" whilst watching the Peasants Parade earlier today.
Probably shouldn't have had that leftover curry from last night's takeaway for breakfast.

Yeah, the most apolitical option is a hereditary monarchy. Unless we got fully nuts and do a ‘head of state is a lottery’.GogLais wrote: Thu Jun 02, 2022 12:28 pmI can’t say I’ve thought it through that deeply but I’d want an apolitical head of state.Random1 wrote: Thu Jun 02, 2022 9:13 amYeah, I don’t see what value it adds if we just replace her maj with another politician, who’ll vie for votes.GogLais wrote: Wed Jun 01, 2022 12:19 pm

Otherwise, a democratically elected person will, necessarily, be political.

You need to copy us and make the head of state a complete figurehead with no power.
