A big day in South Africa and my mother province KZN. A down run this year. 89 km with an elevation loss of 6371 feet - over accumulated hills. An ultra-marathon that's been won by some greats of the sport. Today won by a guy who works as a security guard at North West University. A life changing day for Tete Dijana!

Ladies race won won by Russian Alexandra Morozova (I know boooo!) but she competed under an International entry rather than repping the evil empire. The wholesomeness of the Comrades ethos will have cleansed any Russian evil that may reside in her.

Sounds like a legend!

Many great stories about the Comrades.

The race was the idea of World War I veteran Vic Clapham, to commemorate the South African soldiers killed during the war. Clapham, who had endured a 2,700-kilometre route march through sweltering German East Africa, wanted the memorial to be a unique test of the physical endurance of the entrants. The constitution of the race states that one of its primary aims is to "celebrate mankind's spirit over adversity".

Best story is of Bill Payn the Springbok flanker.
In 1922, Bill Payn - school master, rugby player and cricketer - tackled the Comrades Marathon. He first stopped off at Hillcrest where he had a breakfast of bacon and eggs. Having finished this, he ran on to the top of Botha’s Hill where he enjoyed a chicken curry casserole. As the story goes, Bill completed the race in his rugby boots and turned out for a club rugby match - in his trainers - the following day.
