But I still prefer him being sent off for the match, no issues with another replacing him after 20.

He still gets sent off the field in disgrace for the rest of the match.

A double yellow card of punishment to the team.

True. They shouldn't be, though. However, I won't be holding my breath for this to be the watershed moment where refs start consistently enforcing it.

It is definitely annoying to be on the end of a call that, while technically correct, is rarely given.
