Hello internet friends...

I have two queries. One relates specifically to this site...

i) that is, every time I open a tab for this place on my phone, I have to log in again. Often I'll get logged out between posts, other times I stay logged in for a while. I'm running Firefox on an iPhone 11 Pro... FF version 105.1. After the problem reappeared a couple of months back I did the usual things like clearing the cache (which reset my Wordle stats to zero :lolno: ) and upgraded the phone to ios16. None of that has helped. I can't keep my phone logged into this site. It's mildly annoying. No issues with FF on my laptop.

ii) a friend messaged asking me if I knew of any extensions for Firefox desktop that allow the user to bypass a paywall. I think Shanky on the old bored suggested opening up a private tab and that would work... can anyone verify that, or offer a different solution ?

Does it do it in safari too?

You have any odd set up? Like block cookies? Use a VPN?

I usually don’t use Safari so I’ll leave it open today and see what happens.

Standard FF settings allow cookies. You can go strict on those but I haven’t.

This morning is worse than usual… log in twice for each post and I’m getting the ‘submitted form is invalid’ error message again. That was a feature when this started.

Safari has been logged in all day on the phone.

It’s just FF on the phone that gives me trouble. Fine on the laptop.

Cheers ASMO...

it's annoying but hardly the end of the world. I'm curious to find a solution of course, but don't go busting a nut over it.

I have a similar situation on my iphone SE (using safari).

I also get this on wordpress sites.

Here it's no biggie because the phone remembers the login details and it's a one-click operation, the WP sites require filling out email and passwords

It might be an iphone situation rather than a site one.

Re: point 2

There used to be a firefox addon that would bypass several paywalls. I don't find the need as using archive.ph usually gets round them. Also the telegraph website works if you switch javascript off.

there is a desktop extension for firefox called, surprisingly enough, Bypass Paywalls.

It doesn't work on The Times, but it does on NYT, Telegraph, Washington Post etc

I have _completely_ nuked everything on FF related to this site and logged in purely on the https site after that. I'll let you know if this has fixed it...

I've looked at the cookies and they get set for a year. Either the cookie is not being set at all or for some reason (no idea why) it's being flushed.

This actually worked on desktop at least. I was definitely using the non-HTTPS site before.

Can you switch on the redirect to https?

This should help I think.

I’ve been logged in on Safari since I posted about that days ago. FF has been logged out consistently for the same time regardless of me logging in.

I’m using the same https bookmark for both😔

Nuke all the history, temp files, cookies for the site on both browsers. Then log in to the https site on both.

No redirect, just gives a 200 then gives you the page content.

I guess these are the culprits:

Code: Select all

< set-cookie: phpbb3_cjfhd_u=1; expires=Sat, 28-Oct-2023 13:48:04 GMT; path=/; domain=notplanetrugby.com; secure; HttpOnly
< set-cookie: phpbb3_cjfhd_k=; expires=Sat, 28-Oct-2023 13:48:04 GMT; path=/; domain=notplanetrugby.com; secure; HttpOnly
< set-cookie: phpbb3_cjfhd_sid=5609cfa7723b9c082f6874b77aede11c; expires=Sat, 28-Oct-2023 13:48:04 GMT; path=/; domain=notplanetrugby.com; secure; HttpOnly
I'm no webdev, but:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/doc ... TP/Cookies
A cookie with the Secure attribute is only sent to the server with an encrypted request over the HTTPS protocol. It's never sent with unsecured HTTP (except on localhost), which means man-in-the-middle attackers can't access it easily. Insecure sites (with http: in the URL) can't set cookies with the Secure attribute.
So the problem is twofold:

One, you're setting cookies only when SSL is used.

Two, the SSL redirect is not happening. Instead of the 200, I'd expect to see something like this:

Code: Select all

HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
< Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2022 13:54:03 GMT
< server: LiteSpeed

That's good work JM

Simplest solution pending a fix on redirect then is to bookmark the https page.

Q. We're moving house in a few months and I'm looking at broadband/tv alternatives. Currently I have Virgin broadband and tv, it all works very well. I also have a USB Firestick for streaming services.

The quality of picture from the Virgin Tivo box is far superior to that from the Firestick. I'm currently on 250 Meg download on broadband but I can go up to gigabit in the new place - if I go up to that sort of speed will I get a better picture than I currently do if I upgrade from the Firestick to a 4K streamer?

I'll also be using wired Orbi tech to get wifi in each room in the new place.

You have plenty of bandwidth unless several people are streaming at the same time. A 4K stream only needs a about 30 mbit for most services, perhaps allow double that to be safe.

Get a 4K firestick and see how it looks on your current service. If it's fine then you don't need any more bandwidth. If it isn't then that's because Amazon are sending out shit quality streams, not because of your bandwidth.

Live sport on Prime (via SkyQ or Apple TV 4K box) are always low quality. Amazon streams are generally shite res.

Yeah, I agree. Sky Sports was always the best res, although I haven't had a subscription to them for a while, since the last Lions tour. BT wasn't as good as Sky and it's become a bit weird with TNT, I get syncing problems with sound/pictures.
Viaplay has improved from a low point
