Qatar World Cup: Beer to be banned from stadiums, Sky News understands

The sale of alcohol is strictly controlled in Qatar, and it had to relax its restrictions to allow FIFA sponsor Budweiser to sell its products outside World Cup match venues and fan zones. Now, it is understood fans will be told they cannot buy beer at any games during the event.

Fans will not be allowed to buy alcohol around World Cup stadiums, Sky News understands.

The U-turn comes ahead of the tournament's opening game in Qatar on Sunday.

Qatar had originally ordered Budweiser stands to be less prominent, but now alcohol won't be sold at all at stadiums.

FIFA said: "Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters.

"There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar's World Cup stadiums.

"Host country authorities and FIFA will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.

"The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev's understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022."

I think the FBI should carry on the good work it started, & just declare FIFA an Organised Crime syndicate, & rest of the world could then cooperate, & clean their own houses.

Steady on mate, they have a great airline. Let's not throw the Budweiser out with the other soapy water.

Bit sad that European fans are going to get arrested for having a few pints on tour. No matter they think they're playing by the Qatari rules and drinking legally (and in moderation), some are going to get into shit and that's unfortunate.

Never been an easier time to crack out 'I'm more of a rugby man tbh' during pre tournament 'who should be in the England squad' office discussions though, so there's that

They’re refusing to pay for the ‘paid for’ fans now.

“Fans who have travelled to Qatar as part of a controversial paid-for supporters programme have been told by Qatari authorities that their cash has been cut.”

It’s going to be a complete shit show.

Wasn't RWC 2007 in France similar in some ways? Certainly I remember only being able to find non-alcoholic Heineken at the Stade de France during one match.

It's been like that for ages though you cannot advertise alcohol or tobacco in France. (H cup)
You cannot sell alcohol in stadiums either.

I particularly liked this bit in the shitstain's ramblings:

"If Europe really care about the destiny of these people, they can create legal channels - like Qatar did - where a number of these workers can come to Europe to work. Give them some future, some hope."

He forgot to add Qatar's other gift to its migrant workers - serious injury or death with no chance of compensation. 6,500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have died in Qatar since it won its World Cup bid

He added: “Of course I am not Qatari, I am not an Arab, I am not African, I am not gay, I am not disabled. But I feel like it, because I know what it means to be discriminated [against], to be bullied, as a foreigner in a foreign country. As a child I was bullied – because I had red hair and freckles, plus I was Italian, so imagine.”
