Congrats to him and to Irish rugby. He's had a hell of a 12 months and you can't argue with his record of two second place finishes at the highest level for club and country, and of course an away series win over the summer starting with a huge defensive effort in that 42-16 thrashing, backed up by making lots more tackles in the two wins that followed.

That's 3 winners to Ireland now. Remarkable for such a small country, especially when you compare with Australia (none), England (one), and Wales (one). Time to really push on and maybe make a semi-final?

I don't think you understand the transformative effect that losing a semi-final has. It can sustain fans for generations. Look at Wales.

Can confirm the "big win then fall over" approach is a time honoured tactic and one we're very familiar with

Pfft, try being unrelenting shite since the game went pro.

Anyway, England fans must be delighted at Freddie Steward making the 2022 team of the year.

Capuozzo may have had some really exciting moments for Italy, but he's not as rounded a player as Steward nor did he play as many tests this year. I can see why Steward got the nod.

Remember the people who said you couldn't play VDF and POM in the same backrow?

I can see why he did, he's a great young player. In saying that Capuozzo has had some absolutely incredible, year defining, moments, so I think unlucky.

Before people start feeling too sorry for Capuozzo, he did win an actual award as the breakout player of the year, rather than the consolation prize of being named in the world 15. Breakout player of the year seems entirely appropriate to me for what he has achieved this year.

VDF deserves it for being the only Irishman who doesn’t gob-off to the ref.

Poach a loose forward? Now why the fok would we need to do that?
Perhaps if he was a 10 who could kick and tackle.

A 10 who can pass is too much for SA to even ask for.

Because he's GAR and not a dumb meathead who picks up cards for trying to maim his opponents.
