Official FIFA atrocity World Cup thread
Oppo fans have always dug out players for "letting England down". I have a strange recollection of watching a Sheff Wed game in 1994 and an oppo fan singing "Walker lost the world cup" which I think was a reference to a mistake he made in one of the qualifiers v Holland, the previous year.inactionman wrote: Tue Dec 13, 2022 3:45 pmI'd sadly become a bit immune to nasty comments at football but someone actually going to the effort of making a mannequin was a new one on me.Tichtheid wrote: Tue Dec 13, 2022 3:39 pminactionman wrote: Tue Dec 13, 2022 3:30 pm
I was at the Boleyn the first time Man U played West Ham after the Argentina sending off, and some lunatic had brought a mannequin of Beckham on a gallows.
Just bonkers.
All Beckham was ultimately in error for was weakly retaliating to a snide wind-up merchant in the days when it seemed snide wind-up merchants were more acceptable to referees. I'd have thought his honest response to a shithead of a fellow pro would be understood. He was treated like he firebombed an orphanage.
Still, I struggle call it an over-reaction as I can't see any situation where dangling a mannequin on a gallows is an appropriate reaction. A Putin press conference, maybe. But not a man losing a football match.
It does seem football is on an improving gradient in recent years - but, bearing in mind where it started, it's got a fair bit of ground to make up.
Some bastard shouted, "I hope your kids get cancer" at Beckham.
The mistake finished his England career more or less (at age 27) which is very interesting because if you talk to many of his fellow pros of that era they have him in their "Best player I played with/against" XI's.

Yup. Said that the Saids needed to sort their finishing out. They didn't and now they are out.sturginho wrote: Wed Dec 14, 2022 9:01 pm France vs Argentina is really the final noone was asking for. Fitting for the world cup noone was asking for
Well it looks like Most of the arrested trouble makers in France last night were of the goose stepping kind ...

Then the climate gets heavier. People in black outfits, faces masked, gather at the corner of rue de la Barre. An ultra-right group that begins to break furniture and throw projectiles, as confirmed by the Rhône prefecture. The police responded with tear gas. The party takes a nasty turn, according to the police charges and until midnight in the pungent smoke, when the police evacuate the place with tear gas and stun grenades. Seven people are in custody, including two far-right activists.
Forty other activists from far-right movements were arrested in Paris in the 17ᵉ arrondissement for "grouping to commit violence" and carrying prohibited weapons. “They clearly wanted to do battle on the Champs”, assured the police; 167 arrests were recorded, including 145 in Paris. In Annecy, an injured man was evacuated to hospital; arrests took place in Avignon for mortar fireworks, clashes, minor, broke out in Lens (Pas-de-Calais) or Nice.
Agree, I’m not seeing that. Best match in the entire last tournament. Can understand Germany v Arg has 0-0 written all over it but not this one. Bound to have put the mockers on it now.Tichtheid wrote: Wed Dec 14, 2022 11:04 pm I'm out of touch with football. Why is France v Argentina an undesirable final?

Not sure about France other than the English hate them. For me, they are a desperately ordinary side and not worthy of being titled "best in the world".
Cheer up, France might still lose. English fans tend to hate the "Argies" because of the hand of god and the Falklands war. They did put the dirty Dutch team out, so they can't be all bad, plus Messi is pretty entertaining.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Thu Dec 15, 2022 11:06 amThe Argies are cheating b*st*rds.Tichtheid wrote: Wed Dec 14, 2022 11:04 pm I'm out of touch with football. Why do you think the English hate the French? I’m not an expert, but as far as I am aware, English football fans’ particular bete noir teams are Argentina and Germany. France barely feature on the list of most-hated teams, and given the choice most will be supporting France on Sunday.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Thu Dec 15, 2022 11:06 amThe Argies are cheating b*st*rds.Tichtheid wrote: Wed Dec 14, 2022 11:04 pm I'm out of touch with football. If I'm not mistaken whoever wins will become the fourth team to win three titles after the following countries achieved the feat in:
Brazil - 1970
Italy - 1982
Germany - 1990
Overall, I will probably be cheering for France but I would not be sad to see Messi win the world cup.

1. "Argies" is all a bit Falklands-era speak for my taste
2. Football is rife with the sniper in the stand or the cheap shot, but let's not kid ourselves that rugby is not all about cheating - it always has been, we celebrate "dark arts", what you are really referring to is cheating - football got rid of kicking or punching an opponent a hell of a lot earlier than we did, so lets not get too sanctimonious.
Seems pretty popular with his teammates at the moment, and I don't think I've seen anything from him this tournament that elevates him above "professional footballer" level, certainly nothing like the extreme cuntery of the Argentinians.
People forget how young he is, I think.

The French side are pretty cunty. They are very good at rotational fouling. They blatantly targeted and kicked saka out the match and with this ref wouldn't have kept 11 on the pitch against England.JM2K6 wrote: Fri Dec 16, 2022 9:21 am Seems pretty popular with his teammates at the moment, and I don't think I've seen anything from him this tournament that elevates him above "professional footballer" level, certainly nothing like the extreme cuntery of the Argentinians.
