What are the best sites to hunt for jobs? I already know how to look for work in education and the council. Where else do jobs get posted?
The usual generic sites like Indeed, Monster, TotalJobs etc or do some research and pitch yourself directly to companies/organisations that interest you.
I got a job through Linkedin before, Indeed seems to be pretty commonly used as well. Something I believe is different from what I hear from mates in Canada is that there is a much larger emphasis on using recruiters over here than there. You don't get charged (the employer does), and then they'll search for you and line up the interviews.
Some are complete chancers and wastes of space, others are really quite useful, and providing you have half an idea what you want to do and a half decent CV you should then have quite a few jobs open up for you. Hays have national coverage but it may be worth looking in to some based round Bristol as well.

I'd start by getting a CV up on the main job sites - just google for the main ones like Monster - and the recruiters will usually do a scan of uploaded CVs. Linkedin is also increasingly being used for recruitment, but I'm not sure it does contract work, only permanent- I've never been directed to contract roles via linkedin. This might suit you, I'm not sure. As others have said, an issue is you'll likely get a few timewasters/fishing, and some recruiters get a fee just for getting CVs submitted - these turn into massive wastes of time, energy and goodwill for all concerned, so be a bit careful if you don't think the role is right.
These job boards are just middle men, the adverts are either prepared by the employing company or (increasingly frequently) by a specifically tasked recruiting agency, and it's these recruiters you obviously need to speak to . Registering with Monster etc will just save your details to do a few noddy pattern/term matches with adverts, which is of limited use.
More pro-actively, many employers will go through the same recruiters, so if you find an ad on the generic job boards that has closed or isn't quite right (too junior, senior, too techie) but you fancy the company you can locate the recruiter's website (it's usually linked or at least quoted) and register directly with them - ideally think of a pretext for ringing or emailing them. You'll be more likely to hear from them if another role pops up.
Its a bit tricky to recommend a specific recruiter, as many specialise in certain types of role or sector. It's much better to work a relationship with recruiters, but that takes a bit of time.
As chance would have it, a lad I worked with started his own company using machine learning to match candidates with short-term contracts. I've never used it, but he won a load of venture funding and it's winning awards and has been featured in the press quite a bit - have a look at gigged.ai. It is very techie focused, not quite surwe aht your sector is?
Finally, don't, whatever you do, follow a recommendation for a specific job from anyone on the bored unless you want to be deported.
