Some poor fucker has had his hand cut off, whilst trying to protect his car from vandals.

Just seen a dreadful video of the guy afterwards, circulating on twitter. I won’t post it. Just search hand cut off on twitter.

Wasn't till I first saw La Haine as a kid how some French police come across like a paramilitary group. Certainly more palace guards than public servants.

Done themselves no f*cking favours here; actually fanned the flames.

Civil War? What an hysterical drama queen.

Obviously things are pretty serious on the ground, but it's a bloody long way from something as severe as civil war.

I’m not sure on why that guy called it a civil war. That would imply two sides fighting.

I can only see one here. And the interest, so far, has been on destroying, burning down and stealing from all cities.

It’s horrific. But they don’t seem to be trying to kill people so far. Well apart from the guy with his bones broken and hand cut off. Or maybe the propelled hand grenade at the police station above.

The French policy aren't exactly shrinking violets or ever outnumbered. They always seem to be more up for a fight in these situations instead of trying to control and reduce the violence.

More interested in how you first shoot an unarmed person in the head.

Then, after a huge, near uncontrollable outpouring of anger, hatred, violence and opportunism in a country well known for it, your police union decides to give press releases about being at war with hordes of savage vermin.

I’m assuming that will be covered in a court of law.

That's because the Gendarmerie is exactly that and basically comes under the armed forces jurisdiction whereas the Police (used to be the Surete of Clouseau fame) is civilian. The Gendarmes are hard core, racist f**ks whom everyone hates and make the Met look like a model of policing.

No, I do not think it's normal. Hence 'hatred', 'violence' and 'opportunism'.

This stand off goes way back further than I can comprehend. I'm not French and haven't a f*ckin clue about how the social contract's working. Just that both sides appear singularly up for knocking the shit out of each other, and it's not getting better as the years go by.

Not the kind of future society many would want to live in.

Without weighing into the rights and wrongs of the original incident, did they find drugs in the car or was the driver just driving like a cock for the craic?

Public appeals for donations

Dead kid 70k euros
Policeman who shot him 250k euros

Edit

Some French cops get very little weapon training, Like literally a 1day /20shots per year.

I’d say that there’s a chance it went off accidentally as he tried to drive away. Ie his hand was inside the car pointing the gun.

But obviously, I don’t know enough about firearms or protocols to properly assess it.

Allegation from the passengers is that the shot is what made him fly off.

French police aren't great on the humanistic scale it has to be said.

Uncle fester, you can see in the video on twitter posted by Ymx - the shot is after car accelerates against him.

He probably never should have had the gun pointing at the guy, the act of doing so seems reckless. Unless he thought the driver was armed. I'd guess 99.9% of time a driver respects the fact a gun is trained on them, unfortunately in this case is was a wild 17 year.

This bollocks better not affect the TdF.

I'm not up to speed (ahem) with the route of the Tour but the riots will be confined to major cities with immigrant background populations and so Paris is the only candidate I can imagine: and that's always at the end of the tour when this might all have blown (ahem) over.

Ironic that the most illegal drug use, road event in the world might be interrupted by a drug related road event.......

What I can tell you from the word of an expert in the UK is here, the officers would not have had their arms (either variant) inside the car to start with.

Can't tell from your link but it looks like only one was pointing a weapon and he was stationed outside of the vehicle?

The Tour is currently in Spain and will be for a few days.

Ironic that someone on a rugby board, a sport that is notoriously lax when it comes to consistent, systematic testing of performance enhancing drugs should be lazily pointing a finger at the sport that has consistently been the most stringent when it comes to testing for some years... more so over the fact that that sport's flagship annual event is underway complete with its usual attendant rigid testing protocols.

A cheap shot, a lazy shot, probably no more than a simply ignorant shot.

Possibly because rugby can afford to be whereas cycling (as a single event: athletics encompasses a range of sporting events) is far away the most drug ridden sport in the history of human kind. Not just in terms of numbers or % of participants but for the length of time it went on for.

Simpson's death was probably decades before you were born and the cheating had been going on for at least a decade before then.

And drug testing can only really test for known substances.

Tom Simpson's death is part of the lore of cycling. Horrible but there it is, his is a legend.

Rugby isn't in a position of being able to afford to be lax. It's an ideal candidate for performance enhancing illegally. I remember Habana taking his jersey off on the sidelines once and all the talk being of the signs of steroid use evidenced by the skin condition on his back. Guys go for massive gains to get into higher grades.

Whatever cycling was years ago, it is now the most intensively monitored sport on the planet... trying to point a finger at it now for the misdeeds of years ago would be like... suggesting the French would rather turn and run from a fight because they folded to the Germans at the first smell of schnitzel on the breeze.

You may be right about rugby although I wonder if the complexity of size and shapes and the power v stamina demands somewhat limit the adv of bulk related drugs. Most props would still be laughed at for the amount of body fat they carry: say, cw a shot putter.

Cycling is going to have to be uber clean for a very, very long time before anyone trusts it as a true sport outside those who imbibe in the cultural aspect. I was a huge fan of the TDF (but rarely watched other cycling outside of the Olympics) but Armstrong was the last straw in the credibility stakes for me.

I've seen far darker, grislier shit than what's currently going on, I've an unfortunately strong stomach. What's ghoulish is that both across this and the Nottingham thread you seem to be excitedly searching for bad things being perpetrated by minority groups so that you can justify prejudicial viewpoints.
