Do you need to have watched Backdoor Sluts I and II to fully appreciate the third instalment?

I'm interested in what slipped in under the radar, the really good films that might not have that sort of publicity.

I'm not a great student of French cinema, but I've rarely seen a bad one, modern films like Amelie and Betty Blue are well known here, as well as the Three Colours Trilogy - which were all darlings of the arthouse cinema here, and I really like them, but one that didn't get many great reviews was Priceless (Hors de prix) - it's a fun rom com about a gold digger and hotel waiter, I watched it just when I was in the right mood (I had a stinking cold and wanted something light).

That's the sort of film I'd like to hear about.
For starters
Berri's Manon des Sources and Jean de Florette.
Le Mari de la coiffeuse.
Les Amants du Pont-Neuf
Delicatessen (close to making my top 10).
Les Triplettes de Belleville.
Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (which I thought was funnier than the critic's favourite of Mon Oncle).

I loved it and up until Bigbug the last of his movies I watched. Hairdressers Husband was another French movie I loved as a young lad. Wonder what I would think now that I am an oul lad like the husband
He has struggled to get funding for his filums as financers won't take a risk with him. Netflix was a last resort and their filums have been pish so far.

Bang on.

Night of the Hunter's already been mentioned, an absolute masterpiece far ahead of its time that started and finished Laughton's career. What might have been. His audio narration is up on Youtube, well worth a listen.

More recently, Toto the Hero is also a beautiful film. Others in no real order, Pelle the Conqueror, Babette's Feast, Wrath of Khan, Sunset Boulevard, Some Like it Hot, Holy Grail, Do the Right Thing, Double Indemnity and Team America.

You'd need at least 50 picks to do this one justice.

If you are after some less well known choices

The Battle of Algiers - not a comfortable watch, but an incredible film. The cast are almost all non-professionals and includes people who had been members of the FLN in Algiers.

Touch of Evil (had to include a Welles film)

Night of the Hunter

La Grande Illusion

Aguirre, Wrath of God
Thanks! Im with Tichtheid, rarely seen a bad French movie and love them. Will definitely have a look at these

It truly is delightful, and is so deep and works on so many levels. It touches subjects like severe PTSD, Homelessness, loss, love, the performances were outstanding...all four main characters should have got Oscars.

When the reveal of the Red Knight that persues him, when he has PTSD flashbacks, is actually his wife's brains being splattered into his face by a shotgun blast, it makes you fucking speechless. Or when the Amanda Plummer character is basically the exact same sort of marginalised, loner, loser character as the lone gunman, that blasted his wife..and he loves her anyway (and would have loved and forgave him) .it just makes your heart break.

What a f'king film..so many levels to it.

Plus it has one of the most perfect and romantic scenes ever filmed..

Amazed Zulu hasn't been mentioned. One of the best (and most misunderstood) war films of all time.

Also, Ulzana's Raid is a fantastic Western/War film that never gets the recognition it deserves. Burt Lancaster at his very best.

I'd forgotten Aguirre. Might have to re watch as not seen for decades. I had never seen a film that so captured the wonder that Europeans must have felt exploring a strange new world.
