As someone who never played the game or read the books, monster fight scenes are definitely the best thing about The Witcher. It would've been an ideal show for me if each episode revolved around Geralt hunting shit rather than other characters politicking.

The monster episodes are pretty good yes. The season 2 opener episode was excellent.sockwithaticket wrote: Sun Jul 16, 2023 9:58 pm As someone who never played the game or read the books, monster fight scenes are definitely the best thing about The Witcher. I just finished binge-watching The Handmaid's Tale
It's not consistently brilliant, but the amount of time it slips below that level is not worth bothering about. Elizabeth Moss carries it along with the same force of will that her character displays in the story.
It's not what I'd call an easy watch, mind.

I binged series 1 of The Bear recently and really enjoyed it.

BrainDead, Red Oaks and the first series of Loudermilk (goes downhill after that) are hidden gems I recall from my days of having a subscription.
A mate kept telling me The Tick was great, but I decided 'No more Amazon' before I got around to it.

Missus binged on Sneaky Pete, Maisel and the like but until Deadloch came along I hadn't seen anything really well done by them.Ymx wrote: Wed Jul 26, 2023 9:38 am Is there anything on Prime? It's mostly deliveries and the odd film alright.
Well all the summer series games are on there if thats any helpYmx wrote: Wed Jul 26, 2023 9:38 am Is there anything on Prime? With all its subscriptions and ad included ones, is Amazon prime actually worth it any more for occasional free deliveries?
Series 3 part 2 was utter cack, the final episide was just a mess, its like they couldnt think of anything to do and so just did that.
I’ve had prime for some time now. In fact it was the first streaming service I had.
There were some very good series on it. But there doesn’t seem to be anything on it now. They seem to just now be pushing subscription ad ons like lions gate etc.
I can’t think of anything recent I’ve watched on it!?

I enjoyed carnival row, Good omens 2 is just released, the devil's hour was good, I liked invincible, the boys is some stupid fun.Ymx wrote: Sun Jul 30, 2023 1:32 pm I’ve had prime for some time now. In fact it was the first streaming service I had.

Not mentioning older series that I assume you've watched like Vikings and expanse.
Hunters was too much for my missus.

The Cavill nonsense is tiresome. The fanbois decided LHS was a bitch and piled into her & the showrunners but industry insiders indicate that Cavill was very difficult to work with.

Just watched on RTP2 (Portuguese equivalent of BBC) all three series back to back of Smother.
Greatly enjoyed it. My wife described it as more a soap opera on speed than a thriller but after the first couple of episodes we found it addictive.

I watched The Rig on Prime (I could have watched it on BBC but just never got around to it. I got even more from it as I had watched Chris Packham's Earth show and it went through a lot of geology - and it really did help.

Will be interesting to see what happens with the new guy. He'll probably upset the incel fanbase by defending female members of the production from the horrendous abuse they've been subjected to online, something Cavill notably declined to do.
It's sad to think of just how good GOT was in is heyday. The thread on PR had a top five moments of the show and people picked totally different ones because they were so spoiled for choice.
Yellowstone is ridiculously good fun apart from how badly miscast the youngest son is.Tichtheid wrote: Sun Jul 23, 2023 9:05 pm I just finished binge-watching The Handmaid's Tale

Season 3 has mostly been a bit of political intrigue strung out to a whole series.

Nah, if they could recognise and improve the problems, they wouldn't have put it out as is in the first place. It's the latest of a slew of recent shows where writers and producers aren't familiar with, don't respect and/or don't care about source material (Wheel of Time, Rings of Power, The Watch, Halo, Altered Carbon S2).
They can get away with that if they make a good enough show and draw in a large enough audience from outside the established fan base, but if they don't then the terminally online nerds who love the source material will fuckin' let them know and poison the well.
The Boys is an example of a show that has some pretty big deviations from the source material, but stayed true to the spirit of it and so it's pretty widely liked.

I binned S3 after 3 and a bit episodes. Wasn't even good enough for background fodder for tasks like laundry folding and bass practice.

Ironically season 3 of the Witcher is the one that has followed the books most closely.
I'm only an episode or two into the third season of the Witcher but I thought the fight scene at Kaer Morhen was one of the best in terms of recreating a big fight from the games and we were finally seeing the relationship that existed between Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri at the start of the third game.
Disappointing that it sounds like the full season isn't great. I wonder did they just get caught between three stools, satisfying the books, the game and the general audience who didn't have any knowledge of the first two.

Finished Good Omens 2 last night. Pretty good and entertaining, although the 4th episode jarred badly with the general tone of the series and the source material, and the ending thankfully largely avoided too much fanservice for the tiresome slash fiction crowd.
Jon Hamm's grey overcoat in the 6th episode was gorgeous.

Just finished myself. Entertaining but not a patch on the source material from the book. That said, I loved the seamstress nod to Discworld and that conversation in the fifth episode was worth it alone.Hal Jordan wrote: Thu Aug 03, 2023 11:50 am Finished Good Omens 2 last night. Very much a setup for a third series but they're stretching it as it is.

I'm on Episode 3. It's solid, but not much more. The supporting cast of characters are nowhere near as interesting as those from the original series, though Boyd Holbrook is trying his best to inject some charisma into his character. The daughter is downright irritating. Detroit as a setting has been much less characterful than Harlan County.yermum wrote: Wed Aug 02, 2023 2:50 pm Justified city primeval is ok it has none of the charm of the original series .
The lack of Boyd crowder is a massive loss
Re: Cavill, I thought it was well known he is a massive Witcher nerdboi? One of the reasons he was so into Season 1 (and I thought worked well) was because he was challenging the showrunners and basically anyone else about authenticity and the style he wanted to play the Witcher in. The background story of Yennefer was, for me, just that - a parallel story that didn't overtake Geralt's. Ciri is introduced but, again, in a secondary way.Uncle fester wrote: Tue Aug 01, 2023 11:12 pmCavill suited the role pretty well yes.EnergiseR2 wrote: Tue Aug 01, 2023 1:43 pmHe may have been but he was good in the role and the show was decent at one point. S2 then came along and it was all about Ciri, a lot more about Yennefer and Geralt was relegated to bronze medal podium position. Which seemed odd for a series under his name. Apparently he fell out massively with everyone about the direction they were taking it (too woke, too much deviation from the books/games). I can see why and I'm assuming he saw the script for the third season and thought, "sod that".
Onto other series... played catch up with Foundation on Apple TV. I think I'm still to watch the most recent episode, but really enjoy it. So long since I read the books, I'm enjoying it for the big production and generally decent acting. It's good but it seems not universally loved.
I've just started watching Silo, also on Apple TV. Seems good so far - an episode and a half in.

I watched it, but mainly through stubbornness. The main character was that annoying every decision is right type.Bullet wrote: Sun Aug 06, 2023 7:26 am Hijack with Idris Elba is a really good watch.

I thought the plot had more holes than a curly wurly. Really lazy writing and that chase scene was genuinely laugh out loud funnyBullet wrote: Sun Aug 06, 2023 7:26 am Hijack with Idris Elba is a really good watch.
