Assume there is no existing thread?

Think the Irish girls will get hockied here. Probably still have PTSD after being roughed up by those Colombians

The Kiwi women were convincing winners against Norway in the opening match. This was the first win by a NZ team at any World Cup, men included.

On my feed, there was none of the normal music being pumped out at every even half break in play. It was a pleasant change

That doesn't happen in a football/soccer matches.

Something I wish rugby authorities would take note of. It was so refreshing to be able to hear the crowd noise.

Yep, I only saw the second half, but they were well on top for most of it. Terrific performance.

As long as I can remember, Kiwi soccer teams (male and female) have, aware of the inferior skill level, relied on fitness and physicality, so it was a breath of fresh air to see a Kiwi soccer team outplaying a European team on skill and tactics.

Cagey start to the tournament.

3x 1-0s and a 0-0, and 2 of the 3 goals have been penalties. When is the first big clash?

I'm only really getting into watching international women's footy so I'm assuming the big dogs are:

-US
-Eng
-Spain
-France
-Netherlands
-Brazil

Anyone else in with a reasonable chance of going the distance?

Just reading on Beeb that 15 of the Spanish players made themselves unavailable for selection before the tournament due to a dispute with the coach

Crikey, going to be a toughie for them.

Argument over pay I assume?

Going to start to look like I follow women's football closely which I don't but one of the podcasts I listen to does cover it. Spain has a lot of good players including the world's best player and a coach who has been there for 8 years and won bugger all. The coach of the spanish mens team would have 100% been fired with similar results. The head coach is also sporting director in womans football so would have to fire himself. He was granted the role on a internal vote not on a recruitment campaign. The previous coach was apparently homophobic, controlling and abusive. So probably low levels of trust between players and authorities. With professionalism FA's recruiting poor coaches for their woman's team doesn't really cut it anymore hence England ditching Phil neville and recruiting the coach who won the previous big tournament.

The Philippines win 1-0. Quite the reality check for the Ferns, but not entirely unexpected.

Aussies 2 - 3 Nigeria, got through about 30 minutes of this game, horribly bad football by both teams, aimless kicking, poor pass taking .... oh dear no wonder the U.S team got bet by some 15yo male players if this is world cup standard. Assume teams like Germany or England are much better :???:

South Africa beat Italy 3-2 to go through in the group.

FIFA did their best to get Italy across the line - including not ruling off an obvious offside goal and playing 17 minutes of extra time after offering 11 minutes.

Nice story for SA though.

The Yanks got thru by the width of the post. So close to going home early which would have been great.

Man they are soooo bloody entitled. (So are the Dutch but they are better looking)

Anyone following their pay dispute with the Yank Soccer Governing body would pick up on the entitlement, talk about having your cake and eating it as well. No surprises here if U.S soccer goes bankrupt over the next few years, absolutely abysmal decision making.

Oz looking good to get through Denmark and into the Semis, assuming Denmark are as horrendous at the game as the locals

Jaysus, the Irish women's team didn't do much on the pitch but they'll be remembered for the off pitch antics.

Pretty funny seeing the Yanks getting knocked out.
I hope the coach is well payed having to deal with that toxic environment.

Quite incredible when you see how much the US women earn in comparison to the rest, even the likes of England and Germany. They don't appear to be the most popular team with their own country folk either.

Why what have they done? A quick Google clearly indicates they've upset the right wing media circus with something about not singing the anthem.

There are quite a few obnoxious and arrogant players on that team, main culprit - Megan Rapinoe.

Very poor - no provocation or mitigation whatsoever.

Nigeria the better team.

Hammered some weak opponents at a previous competition and their behaviour was "less than sporting". You could even say it was kiwiesque.

USA v Thailand
13-0
Sure they needed the goal difference but the gloating over the later goals was just ugly.

Clever play from Nigeria as James was fouled if you look at the Nigeria player put the arm across just before to obstruct.

Edit: James has been niggled at all match as England's biggest threat. Not unusual watch any match with saka in the premiership and international matches and yes he had more yellows than players received for constantly fouling him.

They decided that they didn't like the pay deal that they themselves negotiated.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... ement-case
In the court of law, the women lost the bulk of their case on summary judgment, a decision that surprised the media but was less of a surprise to lawyers who actually examined the case and sought alternative remedies for the team. The key factor was that the US women had always negotiated not just for a different pay scale but for a different pay structure – many women were on salaries while the men played for bonuses only.

“The WNT was willing to forgo higher bonuses for other benefits, such as greater base compensation and the guarantee of a higher number of contracted players,” Judge R Gary Klausner wrote. “Accordingly, Plaintiffs cannot now retroactively deem their CBA worse than the MNT CBA by reference to what they would have made had they been paid under the MNT’s pay-to-play structure when they themselves rejected such a structure.”
I get the impression that this actually penetrated into American popular consciousness a fair bit because I remember seeing some fairly mainstream comedians like Bill Burr making jokes about it, which indicates they think the audience both know and care enough about it to engage with the material.

Not sure how Nigeria didn't win that.

Will the new English poster girl be saved the Becks post 98 treatment now that they are through?

Absurdly good through ball for the Aussie’s first goal.
