The amount of rugby people and "fan pages" raging that Genge got pinged for angling in supported by a picture of Koch at 45 is laughable considering the penalty was for Genge going to his knee before anyone moved off straight.

The only picture I have seen is Genges knee briefly on the ground before the balls in.

If that was something OKeefe thought was a penalty why did he let the scrum go ahead? Or not indicate advantage?

Could have been for a number of reasons. It was a big moment in the game and it was important to get it right. Maybe he wanted to give himself a second in his thought process, maybe he was willing to let it go but felt that caused Koch to go inside at an angle due to his right shoulder being pushed down and realised it should be penalised. The act in itself was small but screwed the whole scrum in the end.

Either way it was the correct decision.

Watched the match again in full this morning, sober and calmer.

On reflection England weren't as good as I felt last night, and SA weren't as rubbish. Both teams looked very limited. That said, a review also brought home more strongly how difficult the conditions were.

If it's dry on Saturday I really can't see SA beating NZ. The ABs are just too good and savvy to go down to unambitious, muscle rugby.

Borthwick completely narrrowed Englands focus to kick/kick chasing, maul defence and tackling...I would be surprised if an attacking move was practised all week.

SA had no idea what to do against a teams refusing to play against them and actually being better physically (scrums last 20 minutes aside).

Its what makes rugby so fascinating..the worlds no1 side and reigning champions one dodgy OKeefe decision away from being turned over by a coach thats lost at home to Scotland coming up with an almost perfect antidote to their strengths.

This has sent me down a language rabbit hole.

As far as I can tell 'kant' for 'side' is related to the Latin 'contra' - against. This is from an etymology website:

In French, it became contre- and passed into English as counter-. The Old English equivalent was wiðer (surviving in withers and widdershins), from wið "with, against."

It has been known for Aussie/Kiwi refs in CC/Soup to get upset about players shouting "die blind kant!", thinking they meant him. Maybe BO'K knew the score.
