A prominent Nepalese mountaineer, who became the first person in the world to climb Mount Everest 10 times without bottled oxygen, has died aged 72.

Ang Rita Sherpa, popularly known as the Snow Leopard, first reached the summit of the world's tallest mountain in 1983.
Quite appropriately, I couldn’t see a thread about this.

Read an obituary for him this morning. Revered in Nepal, for good reason.

There’s a handful of guys who have summited Everest an insane number of times and receive no plaudits in the western world of media. The record was broken last year, 22 summits. Doing it without oxygen once is amazing. 10 times is off the planet. Just superman stuff. What doesn’t get told is the story of all the other work these guys churn through in addition to Everest. They’re incredible... and Nepali people in general are a whole level above when it comes to strength, grace and humility. The friendliness and laughter are legendary. The saying is you go to Nepal for the mountains, you go back for the people.

RIP Ang Rita Sherpa. Namaste.🙏

I remember reading about him in Bonington's books as a kid in North Wales.
