God, it’s a fine balance isn’t it. RIP.

Does the report suggest the gun was then used to shoot the assailant? Or perhaps he shot himself? Just going on the statements that the assailant had gunshot wounds but no police firearms were discharged.

What are the chances that the perp wasn't searched because the police were scared of offending or transgressing a particularly sensitive 'ism'?

That's tragic. RIP.

But you can't get away from the feeling that that is a massive fuck-up on someone's part. Not necessarily the failure to search, but not handcuffing is a massive blunder, no?

How the fuck does a cop get shot by an offender at the police station?

Something's seriously off there. Should have been disarmed before being taken back, Shirley.

He was handcuffed apparently but they were removed. He obviously wasn't searched properly before they took them off.

It's like a bad U.S. cop show that you dismiss for being far-fetched.

I presume he turned the gun on himself as it is a single story building.

The BBC are reporting that the shooting occurred during routine questioning about Covid-19, so it’s possible that they weren’t expecting him to be armed when he was arrested, and it was only when they went to search him that he produced the gun.

When the death was reported this morning, there was a comment from another officer that this was possibly a result of the police being more cautious about searching people before taking them into custody because of the recent focus on stop and search, but it was removed fairly quickly.

I would say he is bang on. Young cops are also notoriously shite at properly searching suspects, alomost as if they are embarrassed to properly get in about the necessary areas for fear of offending someone. Cressida Dick has also been quite vocal about not routinely handcuffing all prisioners which is bound to lead to issues.

The police officer who was killed has been named now.

Sgt Matiu Ratana moved to the UK from New Zealand in 1989, and served in the Met for 30 years. He would have been eligible to retire in two months.

He was originally from the Hawke's Bay area of New Zealand and was educated at Palmerston North Boy's High School.

He was heavily involved in rugby coaching when he was not working, and led rugby teams in Worthing, close to Goring-by-Sea where he then lived and in East Grinstead, where he was living when he died. Ryan Morlen, assistant head coach at East Grinstead Rugby Club, described him as "an absolutely lovely bloke".

If Hollywood has taught me anything it's that Cops approaching retirement are in the risky part of their careers.

The officer sounds like an all round good bloke. :(

Was by all accounts a great guy and the sort of bloke that rugby at its best produces. Big, selfless, humble, brave and tough but caring and upbeat.

Such a shame a genuine good guy is killed because of the anti police climate that irresponsible idiots have whipped up.
