Tesla is recalling more than two million cars after the US regulator found its driver assistance system, Autopilot, was partly defective.

It follows a two year investigation into crashes which occurred when the tech was in use.

The recall applies to almost every Tesla sold in the US since the Autopilot feature was launched in 2015.

Tesla, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, said it would send a software update "over the air" to fix the issue.

The update happens automatically, and does not require a visit to a dealership or garage, but is still referred to by the US regulator as a recall.

The BBC has approached the UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to ask how Tesla drivers in the UK will be affected.

Autopilot is meant to help with steering, acceleration and braking - but, despite the name, the car still requires driver input.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the recall was due to an issue with Autopilot's driver monitoring system, which detects whether the driver is paying attention.

As part of what it has called an "extensive" two year investigation, NHTSA reviewed 956 crashes where Autopilot was initially alleged to have been in use.

That investigation has culminated in this recall, and with Tesla conceding that the system's controls "may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse".

"Automated technology holds great promise for improving safety but only when it is deployed responsibly", the NHTSA wrote, adding it would continue to monitor the software once it was updated.

So two million mugs are going to lose one of the key features that made them buy the POS in the first place, & all the lies he told about FSD are now going to get raked over again, & there's going to be the mother & father of class action lawsuits.

Space Karen is one of the best piss take names I've ever heard.

We watched the new Julia Roberts film "Leave The World Behind" on Netflix the other night, I won't post any spoilers but suffice to say that Space Karen was not happy, and in reacting he showed that he either totally missed the point or hasn't seen the film.
I was surprised he didn't react more outraged to the character in Don't Look Up which was pretty blatantly a mix of him and Jobs.

Space X has also just lost a challenge to an FCC decision not to continue an almost $900m subsidy for Starlink to provide rural broadband. The reason being that Starlink didn't meet basic requirements and couldn't demonstrate that that would change.

Also some rumblings about the neuralink monkey deaths being re-investigated.

I do enjoy it when Elmo takes an L.

Space Karen is genius.

I too watched the movie just the other day and enjoyed it. The scene you refer to was excellent and I wondered how he'd react.

I'm sure some did buy Teslas for the autopilot feature (if that's what it's called?) but I don't think it's fair to describe them as a POS... Tesla has it's issues around labour and quality control but the cars generally seem to be a decent product and owners like them.

It's not as garbage as the other products he's "invented", but it gets shitty ratings, & this is from people who've already drunk the cool-aid & spent a lot of money on a Tesla
Tesla was found to be one of the most unreliable brands in America, according to Consumer Reports’ annual reliability report.

Consumer Reports‘ annual reliability rankings have been released, and with data from 24 brands and over 300,000 vehicles, Tesla fell near the bottom (19/24) along with Mercedes-Benz, Jeep, Volkswagen, GMC, and Chevrolet. Electric vehicles overall also placed poorly, being the second least reliable category of vehicles. Hybrids/plugin hybrids, especially those from Toyota, were found to be the most reliable.

Before diving deeper into the rankings, it is crucial to understand how Consumer Reports creates its yearly reliability rankings in the first place. This year, the company surveyed over 300,000 vehicles (sold between 2000-2022), and over the past year, owners were asked to report issues they had with their vehicles. Issues were categorized into 17 categories; engine issues, transmission issues, interior electronics issues, etc. From this accumulation of data, Consumer Reports then gives each brand a grade out of 100 regarding their overall reliability.
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-placed- ... -rankings/

This isn't particularly surprising as Space Karen famously decided that he knew much more about manufacturing cars than those idiots in GM, or Toyota, & he himself decreed that it was better to let cars that they knew had defects continue on to the end of the line before attempting to repair the defects. This runs completely contrary to everything the real experts in quality, Toyota, preach; which is to fix the issue as soon as it is spotted, as otherwise in the time it takes from seeing it, to diagnosing the cause, & fixing it, you can end up with hundreds of cars which may, or may not be scrap metal !

Very on-brand for him to piss & moan when he doesn't get corporate-welfare himself, but rails against it the rest of the time.

The reality is that Tesla was going bust but for welfare from CA & DC, & SpaceX got a huge welfare cheque from NASA, & that in turn funded Starlink. None of his businesses would have ever made a profit but for this largess from the US Taxpayers, & he's pissed & moaned about it the entire time.

Wheels falling off cars at speed. Suspensions collapsing on brand-new vehicles. Axles breaking under acceleration. Tens of thousands of customers told Tesla about a host of part failures on low-mileage cars. The automaker sought to blame drivers for vehicle ‘abuse,’ but Tesla documents show it had tracked the chronic ‘flaws’ and ‘failures’ for years.

Australian government officials have turned around a huge shipment of Teslas and sent it back to China over a 'biohazard' on board a giant vehicle carrier ship.

The Glovis Caravel, which is understood to be carrying several months worth of the American EV giant's Model Y SUV, has been circling offshore from Brisbane since October 22 as the crew battled to fumigate the cargo ship.

But after weeks of trying to decontaminate the vessel, the ship has now been refused permission to dock in Australia and unload, and has been ordered back to Shanghai, with most of its load still on board.

Neither Tesla nor authorities have shed light on what exactly the biohazard is but there are persistent rumours the ship has been plagued by stink bugs.

Value of X has fallen 71% since purchase by Musk and name change from Twitter
The social media platform X has lost 71% of its value since it was bought by Elon Musk, according to the mutual fund Fidelity.

Fidelity, which owns a stake in X Holdings, said in a disclosure obtained by Axios that it had marked down the value of its shares by 71.5% since Musk’s purchase.

Musk acquired Twitter for $44bn in October 2022 and renamed the platform X in July 2023. Fidelity’s estimate would place the value of X at about $12.5bn.
workers in a crane remove the twitter logo from the company's HQ

The number of monthly users of X dropped by 15% in the first year since Musk’s takeover amid concerns over a rise in hate speech on the platform.

Since Musk’s takeover, X has cut at least 50% of staff and reduced moderation. And in September, the European Union issued a warning to Musk after it found that X had the highest ratio of disinformation posts of all large social media platforms.

Fidelity’s revised valuation of X came from a disclosure which ran to the end of November 2023, Axios reported. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

That disclosure would cover the fallout from a number of major companies pulling advertising on X after Musk endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory, the New York Times reported. Musk responded to the boycott by telling companies to “go fuck yourself” during an interview at an event in New York.

Yep, although you'll remember that he wasn't liquid enough to buy it on his own; still there's a very real chance that it'll go bankrupt this year. The Ad income doesn't even cover the loan monthlies now, & the banks might now decide to call in the loans to force Space Karen to put more of his own money in.

For once Space Karen wasn't lying when he said they'd dug their own grave with the fuck awful truck; & by "we' he obviously meant 'I', because no designer or engineer would ever want their name associated with such a fucking awful object.
One of the very first Tesla Cybertruck independent range tests shows the electric pickup truck covering only 254 miles on the highway.

That’s significantly less than the 320 EPA range, but it was cold and highway driving only.

One of the things most disappointing about the Cybertruck since its production launch is the range.

The electric pickup truck is only achieving the range originally promised at the launch back in 2019 with a new “range extender” battery system that sits in the bed of the truck.

At $16,000, it adds to the already higher price of the Cybertruck, on top of taking space in the bed and not even being available right now.
So $100k for a dog ugly fucking box that's value will collapse faster than a neutron star.

It's almost as if the original "specs" were a total lie, & that when those millions of gullible idiots who forked out $100 bucks as deposits were being defrauded ???

The new Model 3 has no indicator stalks, just buttons. On one wide of the steering wheel. You can imagine how much of an issue this has caused testers going round roundabouts and on European roads...

Car pervert, Johnny Smith, says the best thing Tesla could do is supply its world beating battery management systems and hard and software to people who can actually make attractive cars that don't pander to the cult or tech bros.

That kind of switching of company focus is what the best tech entrepreneurs actually do. Start with product X -> requires us to develop subcomponent Y -> discover vast market for subcomponent Y in product Z made by many other people - > fuck product X let's make billions supplying Y to other people.

Ironically that is more or less how Musk made most of his initial money (well, went from being a millionaire to being a billionaire). Paypal was a pivot - one which Musk himself fought bitterly with Thiel against and lost, much to his financial gain.

I watched that just a few days ago. I remember ages back on PR suggesting a similar concept… hybrid diesel charging a battery pack. It’s such a logical application of the tech and these guys have put it together beautifully. The way he explains his headlight choice sums it all up… a cheap off the shelf product that does the job as opposed to an expensive unique tailored piece of shit.

A bit of work on the cab to increase comfort and they’ve got a serious multi use platform that just delivers for everyone. Fucking brilliant.

Same with the indicator stalk - basically the same as you would find on a 1950s truck and can be bought at any auto parts store or found in any breakers yard. Easy access can be swapped out in about 5 minutes.

Considering they haven't done any weight management (they use unnecessary steel all over the shop on the prototype) and the diesel engine they use is actually larger than they need it to be; and they still hauled a fucking Sherman tank like it wasn't there on their first pull, it really does bode well for them.

I always just assumed that diesel-electric was only viable at larger scale (ie trains) which is shy nobody had done it in smaller vehicles. Apparently not though these guys are looking at doing systems for pickup trucks as well as for haulage.

I know the Chevy Volt had a dual system that recharged the batteries and could also provide direct drive assistance, but haven't seen anything else remotely like what these guys are doing on a commercial level. And it's all just so practical with no executive/marketing hack getting their hands on it to fuck it all up.

The Vauxhall Ampera definitely had a motor solely to charge the battery.

he BMW i3 initially had an option for a petrol motor as a range extender option.

However, advances in battery tech have made this sort of stuff irrelevant, certainly for cars, but there's still a few hopium edge cases, I think Mazda were shackling their rotary engine sideshow as a range extender. Similar to the "I'll wait for the hydrogen car" brigade.

All you need is a small engine functioning as a generator, as he says it runs when it's needed and operates in its optimum rev range, delivering best economy and power output. There's so much potential in this concept... the lightening work as you say, but it's just refinements really, their basic concept is so strong. Brilliant work, and all based on simple, what's needed and works thinking.

Tesla has lowered the range estimates across several Model Y, S, and X vehicles in the US, reducing the figure on certain trims by up to six percent. As reported by Electrek, Tesla’s online configurator now displays an estimated range of 285 miles for the Model Y’s Performance trim, down 18 miles from its previous 303-mile estimate.

The Model Y Long Range is down to 310 miles from 330 while the Model X’s Plaid has dropped from 333 miles to 326. Estimates for the Model S Plaid have also been updated — more specifically, the configuration with 19-inch wheels which has fallen from 396 miles to 359. These changes have not been made to Tesla’s UK and EU listings, and ranges across other vehicles like the Cybertruck, Model 3, and the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive remain unaffected.

Hopefully this leads to VW scale fines for falsifying specs, to go with more Class Action suits.

This happens on the same day that Tesla has recalled ~1.75m cars in China, to go with the 2m in the US.

Hey, at least I did remember about the Chandrasekhar limit from Frederick Pohl, & one of the Christmas Royal Institution lectures from years ago.

The problem with Elon Musk isn’t the drugs, it’s that he’s an idiot with zero self awareness.

More on the cars side of the business...

https://www.reuters.com/business/autos- ... 024-01-25/
Tesla (TSLA.O) tumbled over 12% on Thursday after CEO Elon Musk warned sales growth would slow this year despite price cuts that have already hurt margins at the world's most valuable automaker and fueled investor concerns about soft demand and Chinese competition.
Musk said on Wednesday that growth would be "notably lower" as Tesla focuses on a cheaper, next-generation electric vehicle to be made at its Texas factory in the second half of 2025, which is expected to spark the next boom in deliveries.
But he said ramping up production of the new model would be challenging because it would involve cutting-edge technologies.
Tesla's stock suffered its sharpest intraday percentage loss in more than a year, with $80 billion in market value wiped out on Thursday. That pushed its market capitalization loss for the month to about $210 billion.
"The Tesla headlines have essentially gone from bad to worse," said TD Cowen analysts, noting that the fourth-quarter revenue and profit were also below expectations.
Shares of other EV makers also fell, with Rivian Automotive Inc (RIVN.O), Lucid Group (LCID.O) and Fisker (FSR.N) down between 4.7% and 8.8%.
The EV industry has been grappling with a slowdown in demand for more than a year and the price cuts by Tesla will likely worsen the pressure on the startups and automakers such as Ford (F.N)

"The problem for Tesla is any significant attempt to boost sales from here on will probably need to be achieved at the cost of further falls in operating margin, due to having to compete with BYD in China, as well as increased competition elsewhere," said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets.

Tesla (TSLA.O) CEO Elon Musk said on Wednesday that Chinese automakers will "demolish" global rivals without trade barriers, underscoring the heat the U.S. electric vehicle market leader faces from the likes of BYD, who are racing to expand worldwide.
Musk's comments come after Warren Buffett-backed BYD (002594.SZ)- with its cheaper models and a more varied lineup -overtook Tesla as the world's top-selling EV company last quarter, despite the U.S. automaker's deep price cuts through 2023.
Chinese car companies were the "most competitive" and "will have significant success outside of China, depending on what kind of tariffs or trade barriers are established," Musk said on a post-earnings call with analysts on Wednesday.
"If there are no trade barriers established, they will pretty much demolish most other car companies in the world," he said. "They're extremely good."
Asked about Musk's comments, the Chinese foreign ministry said at a regular briefing on Thursday that it was unaware of the reports but advocated "maintaining a fair, just and open business environment".
Musk has reason to be concerned.
He sparked a price war last year to woo consumers hit with high borrowing costs, in turn squeezing Tesla's margins and worrying investors. On Wednesday, Musk warned Tesla was reaching "the natural limit of cost down" with its existing lineup.

Oh dear, how sad ......
Elon Musk cannot keep Tesla pay package worth more than $55 billion, judge rules

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Elon Musk is not entitled to landmark compensation package awarded by Tesla’s board of directors that is potentially worth more than $55 billion, a Delaware judge ruled Tuesday.

The ruling by Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick comes more than five years after a shareholder lawsuit targeted Tesla CEO Musk and directors of the company. They were accused of breaching their duties to the maker of electric vehicles and solar panels, resulting in a waste of corporate assets and unjust enrichment for Musk.

The shareholder’s lawyers argued that the compensation package should be voided because it was dictated by Musk and was the product of sham negotiations with directors who were not independent of him. They also said it was approved by shareholders who were given misleading and incomplete disclosures in a proxy statement.

One would hope that the rest of Tesla shareholders now evict the useless turds from the Board, & install people who understand they are there to look after the interests of ALL SHAREHOLDERS, & not just the vile incel narcissist they've made CEO !
