Know the song, never knew it was an NZ original. Thanks for posting.

The very first record I bought was one of those ‘Solid Gold Hits’ compilations. I can’t remember which volume it was, I think they made it to Volume 23 or so...

anyway, mine had Slipping Away on it. I must know every string squeak on the original. It’s a beautiful song but I admit to knowing nothing else about Max Merritt himself.

I’m the same. I think it may have featured in one of the Once were Warriors films (a daughter singing karaoke?).

I know that he and my sis were together for a short time on Oz in the early to mid 60s. For years I thought he was an Aussie as well.

Maybe. Jake the Muss also sings it at the start of the sequel film. I’ve seen Temuera Morrison sing it in interviews accompanying himself on guitar. Like several different interviews. I got the feeling it’s the only song he really knows how to play.

It’s a simple, effective tune though. Captures a sad feeling pretty well.

RIP, Max.

Max and the Meteors worked primarily in Straya for years. I saw them play at a no-liquor dance venue run by a local Catholic school waaaay back in 1969. And yep, they were good.
