Oasis!!
Stewart Lee in the Guardian has found another reason for our Scottish members to decry the Oasis reunion:
"But the Oasis reunion already has one unintended consequence. In Edinburgh, a Holiday Inn Express room next August for the first two nights of their Murrayfield shows will now cost you £1,300 due to anticipated demand. Edinburgh fringe performers’ and audiences’ whole month’s accommodation budget would go in a night, so by my reckoning the first two weeks of the festival just got totally fucked, Oasis singlehandedly murdering what 14 years of the Tories’ war on the arts couldn’t quite kill off. Sorted!"

I saw Oasis at Queens Wharf in Wellington in 98. It was awful - the lads just sniped and argued and stopped songs in the middle...I think they even threw some fists?? The worst bit was the last couple of songs they played were actually amazing and showed what an on form Oasis could do.
Any bands past or present that anyone would pay a minimum £150.00 to see?
I can only think of a magically reformed Nirvana that would make me part with that amount of cash.

Mid-80s vintage Guns and Roses, U2 or INXS. The sounds of my school days.Thor Sedan wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 10:32 am I saw Oasis at Queens Wharf in Wellington in 98. I never got to see the Smiths live, I might - might - spring for that although begrudge giving Moz any of my money. Nirvana would be another,if we ever crack reincarnation.Thor Sedan wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 10:32 am I saw Oasis at Queens Wharf in Wellington in 98. I missed an Oasis gig in Bath in 1995 as I had an exam the next day - it's been elevated to Woodstock levels by my mates on slacker courses who went. I can see why people are excited by the chance of seeing them again.

In the realms of the possible, I really, really love Jawbreaker and they do seem to turn out for a handful of gigs each year, but I still don't think I would hand over that amount of money for a ticket. So, I think that basically means it is out of the question for me.

Not that they'll be in a position to charge so much any time soon, but I might stretch that far if Thrice ever did a Vheissu + Alchemy Index tour. Nothing else is springing to mind, it's just a lot of money for one show.Thor Sedan wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 10:32 am I saw Oasis at Queens Wharf in Wellington in 98. Seminal post-hardcore band, kind of more alt-rock over time as they've gotten older. Big for their scene I guess, but not household names by any means. Just the first band that came to mind when thinking about who I might be willing to splurge £150 on a ticket for if it came to that.Biffer wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 1:33 pmWho?sockwithaticket wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 1:29 pmNot that they'll be in a position to charge so much any time soon, but I might stretch that far if Thrice ever did a Vheissu + Alchemy Index tour. Old mate of mine who was a sound engineer gave me a copy of Closer in 1980. I was in my late 20's and it completely changed my music listening habits.TedMaul wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 2:13 pm Joy Division, but Ian would have to have a very late improvement to his health.
Still brings a lump tp my throat and tear to my eye knowing he died a few months after this was released
Id pay that to watch Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne. I first got into them in 1992 when I found my Dad's copy of Sabotage and the album blew me away.
32 years I've been a fan and it's one of my big regrets in life that I never saw any of their reunion gigs. I am seriously kicking myself that I just never did so, when they did their gigs in Birmingham in 1997 I was living nearby but for whatever reason just wasn't on the ball.
Now I think it's too late as Ozzy is in too poor health and not up to it.

I've see Ozzie as a solo artist with Randy Rhodes, and I've seen Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan on vocals, but yes it would have been fantastic to see them together.Hugo wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 5:01 pm Id pay that to watch Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne. Peter Hook does a pretty decent impression of a Joy Division gig for a fraction of the price, with the added bonus of being his own opening act by doing a decent impression of a New Order gig.TedMaul wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 2:13 pm Joy Division, but Ian would have to have a very late improvement to his health.
100%, saw his last tour, spot on, good band and no deviation from the original sound you want. I'd probably *whispers* prefer them to seeing New Order. Less turgid later material.clydecloggie wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 7:32 pmPeter Hook does a pretty decent impression of a Joy Division gig for a fraction of the price, with the added bonus of being his own opening act by doing a decent impression of a New Order gig.TedMaul wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 2:13 pm Joy Division, but Ian would have to have a very late improvement to his health.

Pixies? Nah. Saw them a couple of years ago at Alexandra Palace, they played really well but didn't say a word to the audience through the whole thing, might as well have just listened to the CD. Support was Big Moon who were great and I've seen them a couple of times since.
Ranks with Jesus & Mary Chain at Brixton Academy just after PsychoCandy as disappointing gigs (they did 45 minutes, without saying a word to the audience and then fucked off)

I'd pay to see the Talking Heads again. I don't remember much of my first time around and that was pretty much their last gig. I do remember the absolute avalanche of sound they put out, there was so much going on you had to just let go and let it take you.

I'd pay a lot of money to be 18 at Reading 2000 again. On the Saturday if I had to pick.

Trail of Dead, QOTSA and At the Drive In all riding a wave of hype and going off in the tents. Deftones on the main stage killing it. Whole weekend for £80.
Ironically Oasis headlined one night, which I have no recollection of.

Reading & Leeds really could get weird at times. Where else would Slipknot share the same stage as Daphne & Celeste?
It also gave us the somewhat infamous instance of The Dillinger Escape Plan's* frontman shat on stage as a protest against being on the same bill as Puddle Of Mudd.
*This was a super-abrasive mathcore band with one album at the time, I think it's still a mystery as to how they ended up even in the opening slot for the main stage.

Think the Daphne and Celeste thing was a bit of a stunt from the organisers that worked a treat with the coverage their bottling got. A bit mean spirited in hindsight.
I remember the Dillinger shit episode. Was there that year. Wasn't watching their set but remember people talking about it.
In terms of abrasive bands playing the main stage. I saw Sick of it All playing in 99, complete with massive wall of death. That was an eye opener (and a lot of fun) for me at the time.

It's obviously not the same as being there, but for some people it's the closest they'll get.epwc wrote: Thu Sep 05, 2024 12:35 pm Yeah don't get the concept of watching Glastonbury on the tellie
There are a ton of bands I like who as yet haven't been able to make it to the UK or whose visits thus far just haven't lined up with my schedule for whatever reason. Until such time as I can see them live in person a recording is the next best thing. Youtube footage is obiously hugely variable, but there are some good sources who consistently put out pretty high quality stuff of full sets.
Well watching a concert is not the same as being up on stage performing. Likewise if you're watching another couple live having sex you're probably a Peeping Tom.

Big Daphne and Celeste fan, yeah?Margin__Walker wrote: Wed Sep 04, 2024 8:17 pm I'd pay a lot of money to be 18 at Reading 2000 again. On the Saturday if I had to pick.
