Meanwhile another nutcase has killed a half-dozen or so people down in Austin, & injured others over the course of a couple of days, & Police are trying to put together the pieces of this latest spree killerInsane_Homer wrote: Wed Dec 06, 2023 9:32 pmPolice in Las Vegas are responding to an active shooter alert at the Las Vegas campus of the University of Nevada.
They said there appeared to be "multiple victims at this time" near the university's Beam Hall building.
Las Vegas police later said the suspect had been found dead.
The university first tweeted at around 11:53 local time (19:53 GMT) that police were responding to reports of shots fired on campus.

Imagine the entire population of Dover, or Bury being killed by a preventable cause ...... every year, & doing nothing about it !Indeed, as of Sunday morning, more than 42,000 people have died from guns in 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive. More than 18,400 of them were the result of a homicide.
For the UK it's the equivalent of what 8,000 preventable deaths ?
My ‘favourite’ argument for ‘needing’ guns is home protection and criminals with illegal guns (we’re hearing some people on this with a new Canadian crackdown on handguns). But they don’t want to hear how many of those ‘illegal’ guns were stolen from homes and cars of those concerned citizens ‘needing’ them for protection.

Holy shit. 14 year old shot and killed his 23 year old sister (who had a baby in a carrier at the time!) out of jealousy of present numbers. The 15 year old brother then used *his* gun to shoot and wound the 14 year old brother! 14 year old will be taken into custody once released from hospital, 15 year old is being charged with attempted murder and tampering with evidence (he ran and threw his gun away).Sandstorm wrote: Wed Dec 27, 2023 10:45 am "You got better Xmas presents than I did! Obviously we don't have all the details, but, on the face of it, it seems a bit harsh to be charging the 15 year old.
Press conference I saw had a message from the top cop about guns stolen from homes/cars (sounded like both lads' guns were stolen).Sandstorm wrote: Wed Dec 27, 2023 10:45 am "You got better Xmas presents than I did! BANG-BANG!!""![]()

And as I'd just said a few days ago, the YT comments were all "It's not about guns, it's about 'their' culture!"

Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell has received what thankfully appear to be minor injuries as an innocent bystander during a club shooting incident. 10 people on the receiving end and a 16 year old boy arrested.

Not a mass shooting, but man has gun taken from him by crazy bus passenger who forces the bus to go on a rampage at the point of said gun.
It's fascinating that in chases like this, ALL the police get involved. I've seen takedowns of one driver by 20 cops all with guns drawn. Overkill?

DEVELOPING: At least 9 people shot — including children — in ‘random’ attack at splash pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan; suspect barricaded - Sheriff
This is awful. Rochester Hills is one of the nicest communities in the state of Michigan and statistically one of the 20 safest cities, in the United States. I sincerely mean this, if it’s not safe in Rochester Hills, it is not safe anywhere in America.
I see the dad has been charged and is looking at a possible 180 years in jail.
It seems an enormous fucking cop out and diversionary tactic to start going for the parents. Obviously they shouldn’t be letting kids get anywhere near guns but when you have so many legal guns, a mental gun culture and politicians that don’t give a flying fuck, seems a bit much to just pin all the blame on dad

While I agree on the general sentiment of the propblem being societal, the new trend of charging the parents is to be welcomed !!
In this case, the FBI visited the father a year ago, after a threat of a school shooting, which came from a SM account controled by this shooter. When the Feds spoke to the Father, he assured them that while he had weapons, his darling son didn't have un-supervised access to them, & his darling son claimed that his discord account had been "hacked".
Meth head Daddy, going thru a divorce with Meth head Mummy, then decided to buy the affection of his darling son, who brought the Feds to his door, with an AR-15 FOR FUCKING CHRISTMAS !!!!!!

One of the victims, Mason Schermerhorn, was autistic. As news of the shooting started to spread, parents posted appeals for information about their children and part of Mason's mother's appeal was instructions on how to calm him down if he was agitated.

What do they call it, "the art of the possible" ?Slick wrote: Sat Sep 07, 2024 12:01 pmYup. I still think it’s a cop out from the much, much, much bigger issue
There's no feasible way to fix the bigger issue, there's hundreds of millions of guns out there; so the best any single administration can do is nibble at the edges. Achievable goals are to hold those who put the guns into the hands of children, responsible, & a majority of people will support this; then start to bring in basic background checks on people buying guns, so cut down on the number of people with mental health & drug dependency issues who have guns.
Nothing will ever change. Sandy Hook should have been the final straw. The Vegas massacre showed what's entirely possible with people who stockpile assault weapons.
I sometimes wonder - not wish, of course - that maybe if a GOP or NRA big wig had a personal loss in one of these shootings? Would that 'motivate' them to change? But then I feel the establishment and selfish voters would push them out before doing anything substantial. Too many people just don't care unless it personally affects them.
