Not quite what I expected.

Hong Kong (or South Korea) being served qualification on a platter.

Opportunity for the Netherlands or Belgium to qualify if they can knock one of Spain, Portugal or Romania out.

Chile / Uruguay hard done by.

Assuming Tonga and Samoa take two Pacific places, one of USA or Canada will have to enter more play-off agony.

No change for Africa then. It's a shame, but not like anybody beyond Namibia has been knocking on the door.

It's up to the likes of Zimbabwe and Kenya to push Namibia for that spot. Can't see any of the teams surviving a playoff.

The change there, I think, is that the Africa nr 2 plays off agaisnt the Asia nr 2 this time.

So big chance for Zimbabwe or Kenya as I'd think they'd be favourites against South Korea or whichever country comes second to Hong Kong in Asia.

A lot will depend on the location of the play-offs. I'd back them at home to beat the likes of Korea or Hong Kong, but they'd struggle away. Also because most players have full time jobs.

But still an interesting development, and easier than the previous route.

Winner of that game goes into the final qualifier though, with the loser of the South America / Pacific playoff, the 5th place team from Rugby Europe Championship and the 3rd place team from the sudamerica championship.

Surely with a round of 16 in the next tournament, Ireland will finally win a knockout game?

Ah. Fuck it then, what's the point, they won't stand a chance.

If they can't beat Namibia to the qualification spot then forget it.

It's the best chance they have had, so best of luck to them.

Well, that group is likely to be Canada, Belgium or the Netherlands and Brazil. So they'd stand a chance in that.

You're right, I thought it was direct qualification.

That FQT could be a no-hope parade if it's Canada / Zimbabwe / Brazil / Netherlands, or it could be Tonga / Namibia / Uruguay / Portugal and it would be the tastiest rugby tournament ever.

Aussie-born Western Force great Ian Prior to help Zimbabwe’s bid for 2027 Rugby World Cup qualification
Former Australia Under-20 half-back Ian Prior is set to help Zimbabwe’s ambitious bid to qualify for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The 33-year-old experienced halfback was named in Zimbabwe’s provisional squad for the Africa Cup later in July, which serves as the first stage towards qualification for the global tournament.
Prior was born in Queensland, Australia, but his mother comes from Zimbabwe and initially spent his early childhood in the Southern African nation.
His parents – Ivor and Caroline – moved from Zimbabwe to Australia in 1987 to start a family.

So Algeria beat Kenya in the first semi-final, quite an upset but they looked very well coached and disciplined. Sadly Kenya looked disorganised and completely self-destructed in the second half.

But the big result was Zimbabwe thumping Namibia 32-10. It's the first time we've beaten Namibia in 22 years!!! It's a massive result in the contact of the 2027 RWC. I don't think this tournament counts as qualifying, but it makes the race for the 2nd Africa spot much more interesting.

Zim Algeria final on Sunday.

Zimbabwe appear to be taking their 2027 quite seriously.

Kyle Godwin has been cleared by World Rugby to play for Zimbabwe, and he arrived in Harare today to join the squad for the upcoming tournament in Dubai.

Zimbabwe's march to the 2027 World Cup continues, with a convincing win over Middle East powerhouse UAE.

Alistair Coetzee replaced by Jacques Burger as Namibia coach.
