He's being charged with terrorism. Think that could backfire pretty spectacularly.

Murder should be easy enough to prove but terrorism?
Domestic Terrorism Offense
Domestic Terrorism Offense
Any half way competent defense team should be able to defend that.Prohibits committing, attempting, soliciting, or conspiring to commit any felony with the intent to intimidate a civilian population; influence government policy by intimidation; or affect government operation. The offense is a felony punishable by up to life in prison or death.

I completely agree with this decision.Uncle fester wrote: Fri Dec 27, 2024 9:56 pm Could do with a separate thread.

The US Medical Insurance industry is a terrorist organization, designed to cause terror, & widespread harm amongst US citizens, & to cost the US taxpayers untold costs in suppressing this harm, & cleaning up the consequences of their terror !

His lawyer has already pleaded at his arraignment hearing that he isn't going to get a fair trial with numerous officials referring to him as guilty already, before trial... she's also had a crack at the ridiculous footage of the police escort as he was transferred with a massive, heavily armed contingent surrounding the shackled prisoner.Uncle fester wrote: Fri Dec 27, 2024 9:59 pm Murder should be easy enough to prove but terrorism?

It's quite clear that the establishment and powers that be are trying to make an example of him. They've brought in school shooters and not charged them with terrorism or perp walked them in the way Mangione has been. New York has hundreds of murders a year that go without the resources thrown at them that this case has enjoyed.

Is part of that not because they had to move him across state lines? I'd imagine if school shooters had to be moved they'd have to whole dog and pony show too.sockwithaticket wrote: Sat Dec 28, 2024 12:08 am It's quite clear that the establishment and powers that be are trying to make an example of him. Terrorism charge is just to get him the death sentence I reckon. They'll be gunning for the death sentence for striking at the heart of American commerce.
Yes, I saw a photo of that scene and could not believe my eyes. Mustve been 30 people swarming around him (including Eric Adams). Unlike anything I'd ever seen.Guy Smiley wrote: Sat Dec 28, 2024 12:05 amHis lawyer has already pleaded at his arraignment hearing that he isn't going to get a fair trial with numerous officials referring to him as guilty already, before trial... she's also had a crack at the ridiculous footage of the police escort as he was transferred with a massive, heavily armed contingent surrounding the shackled prisoner.Uncle fester wrote: Fri Dec 27, 2024 9:59 pm Murder should be easy enough to prove but terrorism?

Whether it's the Marshal service or FBI, they are more than capable of moving even quite high risk prisoners (think organised crime figures, actual domestic terrorists, many of whom will have far more victims under their belt than Mangione and a prospect while in transit of their people trying to free or silence them) across state lines with less fanfare and man power. Mangione's transportation was pure theatre.I like neeps wrote: Sat Dec 28, 2024 11:16 amIs part of that not because they had to move him across state lines? I'm no expert, but I'd guess the terrorism angle is partially to hold the death penalty over him to get him to plead on the other charges and reduce the chance of the trial becoming a circus. Could backfire though if he fights it all and tales it the distance.I like neeps wrote: Sat Dec 28, 2024 11:16 amIs part of that not because they had to move him across state lines? The perp walk was pretty ridiculous. Don't think even El Chapo got that kind of service.

It's amazing that they are so brazen about displaying the two tier justice system.

I had sorta hoped that a few copycats would have come out of the woodwork by now, but I guess the overpaid CEOs are getting security built into their wage packets.
