We had a very competitive textiles industry in the UK, especially Lancashire, until the sceptics rather took over the scene. (And of course even whilst we had that market we were importing much of the raw material and adding value for ourselves rather than the producer, and by ourselves I mean the owners of the cotton mills rather than the workers)

Anyway, things change, and you can try being protectionist but others respond and the whole is less than good. That doesn't mean you simply abandon those left behind in a global market, but unless you're going to cancel things like air/sea travel, phones, the internet even then the market is global, so why advance less productive aims?

What there is scope for rather than the more simplistic tariff system is agreements between nations and supranational bodies that in essence establish NTBs, minimum standards if you will around worker, environmental considerations and whatnot, and that can alleviate some concerns around 'unfair' competition. What there shouldn't be scope for is going out of our way to avoid change, because that's backwards thinking

Been watching the coverage solely on CNN, greatly enjoying their frustrated angst because their normal stunt is to just cut Trump off when he starts dismantling any of their false years-long narratives. But as it was the inauguration then this time they couldn't flick the switch on him.

Trump's two addresses, the official one and then an informal one, would have been the first time that many dedicated CNN viewers had been exposed to the realities of the last four years as Trump firstly indicted the cringing shriveling-up Biden to his face and then later when Trump told how the Jan 6 committee had illegally destroyed the bulk of the given testimony because it cleared Trump. He also reaffirmed that Pelosi had denied his offer of 10,000 troops at the Capitol.

On that latter point I genuinely fear for the mental health of some of our posters when it comes to be revealed that yes, the 2020 election was stolen, that yes, the Jan 6 'insurrection' was staged by the Democrats themselves, that yes, all the bogus civil and federal charges against Trump were coordinated by the White House, that yes, Fauci was responsible for the Covid outbreak, and that yes, the jabs and lockdowns were all about instigating and normalizing control of the populace and had nothing to do with necessity.

but .. but .. but .. before president-elect Biden took office he himself warned against preemptive pardons as then-speculation swirled that Trump would pardon his children and personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani: "It concerns me in terms of what kind of precedent it sets and how the rest of the world looks (at) us as a nation of laws and justice," Biden said at the time in an interview with CNN in December 2020.

And the big difference was that Trump's children had done nothing wrong and it was the allegations against them that were 'purely political' Enzedder, whereas massive and inexplicable foreign payments were routed to various Biden family members through torturous 'financial gymnastics' involving at least 20 shell companies in failed attempt at concealment.
The family pardons today were made under cover of darkness, just 22 minutes before the official changeover of power and while Trump was making his address and was thus in the dark and unaware and not able to then make mention.
