President Trump and US politics catchall
You say it’s a broad church, but all things PR have clearly shown that certain celts & liberals are extremely intolerant of free speech, ways of preaching , or any disagreement to their own agenda whatsoever. Bit like an Internet version of Islam for being easygoing and respectful of those with different values.TedMaul wrote: Fri Apr 11, 2025 10:04 am Come on Yeeb it's a broad church, even our graduate from Hustler's University deserves a seat.

The only person I've seen shut down on this board was Bimbo - a character that came on here to deliberately provoke others and to derail topics, ie the very definition of an internet troll.
Otherwise people have been left to write whatever they want, I haven't seen anyone else shut down or have freedom of speech curtailed, within reason of course, the old shouting "Fire" in a crowded theatre is not free speech.

US government spending has increased by $154bn since January 20th. What was DOGE supposed to be doing again?

Seems more likely all this will do the opposite of containing China. I cannot see how they're going to get to the "and then everyone turned on China and sided with the US" part. Containing China is going to require a lot of containment, they're about 3 decades too late.Slick wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 9:41 amI guess it raises the question of how the hell are they going to negotiate all these wonderful trade deals that countries are kicking their ass to do. There is an utter lack of intellectual capital or diplomatic experience in the first few levels of US government now_Os_ wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 8:59 am My best guess at what Mad Dog Trump is up too is that he's going to say if a country tariffs China then he removes the US tariffs on that country, like a gangster he wants everyone in his protection racket not that of another crime family. I can't imagine what else some of the places he's tariffed can give him, it's not like there's anywhere holding out, they're already taking the US investment that comes their way and exporting whatever they can.
When you look at the numbers I'm not really convinced it's going to work. Lets go through some countries:
Australia is highly dependant on China, both directly and through the value chains of other Asian countries, for them a trade war with China would blow up their entire economy. NZ not as directly exposed, but again lots is indirect (including through Australia). SA is more or less split one quarter each US/Europe/SSA/China, but if the choice is dump one the obvious ones you keep are Europe and SSA. UK is mostly Europe focused, then US, then China, could dump China but it's the single biggest source of imports quite hard to replace all that immediately over night and avoid inflation.
Comes back to economic gravity, our old friend from Brexit. If he's going to try and wrestle countries into actively opposing China, the geographically closer that country is to China the more likely it is he'll have to give that country a deal that's really good, exactly the type of relationship Trump hates.
Space got $5.9billion in contracts the other day.fishfoodie wrote: Fri Apr 11, 2025 5:33 pmWell they're just going to give it all to Space Karen so he can use it to kill a bunch of Astronauts trying to prove pretty much every expert on the planet wrong, by sending them to Mars in a suicide missionBiffer wrote: Fri Apr 11, 2025 4:27 pm https://arstechnica.com/space/2025/04/t ... g-at-nasa/

One Chinese company not bothered by the tariffs are the makers of MAGA tat

While many Chinese businesses are reeling from the trade war, Qi, the Maga merchandise maker, brushed off any suggestion his might suffer.
Trump supporters, he said, were willing to pay any price for items bearing the image of their beloved president — and US suppliers were making such a huge profit on them that they could afford to partially absorb the tariff impact.
A Trump baseball cap, for instance, cost only Rmb7.50 ($1) to produce. Tariffs might raise that cost to Rmb20, but the caps were being sold for $50 in the US.
“American sellers could even use the tariffs as an excuse to raise the price to $60 — yet the extra cost will still be borne by the US consumers,” said Qi.

It's also now dawned on what passes for the intelligentsia of MAGA that they're shooting themselves in the foot for supply of much needed hi tech goods
*US PUBLISHES TARIFF EXCLUSIONS FOR SPECIFIED PRODUCTS *US TARIFF EXCLUSIONS APPLY TO COMPUTERS, SMARTPHONES *US TARIFF EXCLUSIONS ALSO APPLY TO CHIP-MAKING EQUIPMENT *TARIFF EXCLUSIONS APPLY TO SO-CALLED `RECIPROCAL' TARIFFS

For what it's worth the Biden administration laid out the blueprint on how to deal with China's enormous manufacturing clout. Select specific areas of national dependency, give US entrepreneurs (which are still the best in the world) the incentive to get out and do things in critical areas, and watch it happen - which they did.
