Trump can't actually deal with hard economic reality. Bend the knee to Xi. Get it over with now and move on to the next headline grabber as he always does.

The very real problem now is the way Trump has gone about this has great exacerbated the issue. A tarrif of 10 or 20% companies and markets could adjust to. Whacking some 100 odd% tariff aribtarily here and taking them off there means many companies are simply stopping shipping altogether hoping it will calm down. Which means no cash flow, the company killer. And if it doesn't die down then companies are faced with the damned if you do and damned if you don't choice. And why should Xi care? For every Chinese company that goes bust, so will a US one. As a nation China's markets are so diversified now it isn't really going to matter in the bigger picture. The US has to buy electronics, they have no choice, the USD will continue to roll into China. Meanwhile US exporters are screwed. A complete cluster.
Meanwhile the US bonds...
Meanwhile the US bonds...

I’vem just seen a post that states Trump got his tariff idea from Navarro who wrote a book in which he quotes an economist called Ron Vara multiple times in calling for tariffs
Ron Vara doesn’t exist, it’s an anagram of Navarro - is this all true?

Can't remember if it's been covered in here at this point, but the Trump administration is trying to argue to the Supreme Court that although, by their own admission, they have deported a legal migrant with no criminal history to this brutal El Salvadoran prison, they have no responsibility to bring him back. And he's not the only one, more and more cases are coming to light of completely innocent people, legal migrants, who've been sent to this prison. I'm seeing little difference between this and the use of concentration camps.
There was also this story that came to light the other day of someone who has been legally living and working in the US for years who was refused re-entry and had their visa revoked for no apparent reason after travelling back to Australia for a couple of days.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... MP=soc_567
Trump's press seretary announced publcly the other day that they were looking at ways to deport US citizens. Only the worst criminals she said, bu that's obviously horseshit in context of the egregious freedom of speech violations and forced deportations going on. We can see on our own shores how a much milder government egregiously misuses anti-terrorism and protest legislation, Trump's lot would be considerably worse.
Congress just passed the SAVE act which will require people to vote with a passport or valid birth certificate. A measure that disproportionately impacts women (especially those who've changed their name when marrying) and minorities. Costs for obtaining these things vary hugely by state, but can be hundreds of dollars. It could already take weeks if not months to get a passport before the swingeing cuts to the federal government. All while the majority of Americans have a perfectly valid driver's license as a form of photo ID. It will allegedly only impact those not already registered to vote, but given the Republican tactic of purging state voter roles before elections it's bound to impact huge number of people now that they have carte blanche to do it openly with regime support.
Using the apparatus of the state to bully the legal sector and non-profits that do such dreadful things as explore pro-environment initiatives.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... horitarian
There's that unbelievable video doing the rounds as well of the latest cabinet meeting where everyone present personally tongue punches his orange arsehole with the sort of scripted over the top thanks for existing that we'd expect from North Korean state television.
The authoritarianism, nay fascism, of this administration is every bit as bad as the most ardent critics warned.

The worst part was that, if this is all true, Trump dispatched his son in law to find him an economics policy that made him look tough. Kushner apparently browsed Amazon and saw a book title he liked - Death By China. This was written by Navarro and in it are the multiple citings of this Ron Vara, espousing tariffs.
And that is how we've come to the situation where trillions have been wiped off the global economy and we're teetering on the brink of a 2008 level global recession, or that caused by Covid.

From my experience of being pulled aside into a small room for interrogation when going through US immigration, they ask for/demand your social media handles so they would be able to check out your posting history. Back in the day that was for checking for your support for ISIS etc. though.Uncle fester wrote: Sun Apr 13, 2025 11:57 amSo delete bookface and xitter off your phone until you get through immigration?Tichtheid wrote: Sat Apr 12, 2025 11:38 pm The TSA is now going through people's phones looking for anti Trump posts on social media.

100%. The identity of The Other will change, but people all over the world are happy to see absolutely heinous shit inflicted on someone else if they can be convinced that their problems are caused by said Other, or through fear of what might be done to them if they don't comply.Uncle fester wrote: Mon Apr 14, 2025 6:00 pm We're probably fooling ourselves to an extent. And it doesn't take much to push people into this state, but financial disasters usually lead to the reins of power being handed to the worst type of person, who then brutalise the shit out of everyone in the long run.

Odd news this morning re Vance and us Uk deal, hard to take anything they say or do seriously as everything is a ‘deal’ with them and some leverage.
Am sure some of the remainer types on here will say it’s a negative even if an agreement happens that helps Uk and puts eu at a disadvantage…
My gut feel is that Vance Trump just want to pressure the EU with these sort of musings, and in reality there is no likelihood of a uk us deal happening soon. It’s all a game to them & they change their mind daily so a any deal could be scrapped in days anyways.

There is a real prospect of a US/UK deal, but it's massively down in scope from what was being sought post Brexit. And that's fair enough, even if you could trust the USA these days

But I'd like to think all but the most ideological would favour UK prosperity first, an ex-UK EU second, and preferably both.
Not sure this MAGA crowd can be trusted either. Thwarted on the first mafia stupid plan their next surely must be divide and rule, so any great deal will surely come with strings attached. Stop talking to China, give us this, don't give that etc.
I don't trust the f#ckers, and Brexit has flip all to do with it. Looks like they need to go through their own first.
