All I know is anecdotal. My cousin, Charles Hart, who I played with when we were children, was killed on his farm a few months ago, and hacked to pieces. My brothers are nervous and so have bought seaside houses a couple of hours away, and will shortly be moving there. There isn't complete proportionality. You are correct that it's a relatively similar rate to the general murder rate in SA, but the difference is that a high % of those murders are gang-related and between South Africans of the same race. Farmer murders are usually black people killing white people. Genocide is a very strong term that I wouldn't use, but there's a cross-racial element in these killings that isn't there in most cases.
