No Sailors ?

The race is excellent this year (as usual)

Jean Le Cam almost surprised every one with his old boat and lead the fleet for a while.

only one retired with a broken mast (Nicolas Troussel) and Jeremy bayou managed to repair and restart.

How do you tend to follow it? Daily highlights or ??

Found this interesting tracker.

What happened to Jérémie Beyou?

I follow the vendée globe youtube Channel.

2 english speaking daily report (2 french) and lots of skipper videos.

Jeremy broke a lot of stuff on his boat and had to return to the start for repairs. (heavy stuff if it had happened later he would have had to retire).

He is leaving Les sables today and will likely attempt a record run as he is nearly 10 days behind he has very little chance to be back in contention for anything else.

Didn’t realise how narrow the Atlantic was in that direction.

Unless the boats aren’t to scale.

Very tight at the top with a Weather window fir the first 3 the others won't be this lucky and likely to fall further behind.

Jean Le Cam strangely still in touch with his old boat.

Our Japanese Friend has finished fixing his main sail thankfully.
Edit: Found his video

He had to work 3 days at least to fix it.

Leader board is unchanged the forecast looks tricky for the lead pack.

the doldrums seem to have closed on the Tail of the race.

Can you explain the challenges of the doldrums for those of us not familiar with the race details.

This is the region where North and South Weather patterns meet.
It Grows and Shrink. The leaders had a favourable window that hardly slowed them. The Tail of the fleet is encountering an enlarged version that has bogged them down further.
As an example the leader of the Jacques Vabre Transatlantic race lost the race in it last year (lost a 100 miles lead and came out 200 behind).

The weather is highly unsettled with localised thunderstorms. This caused erratic wind so you can get 30 knots than 0 then 30 the other way...

It only looks narrow because those boats are freaking ginormous.

Shit, it always pays to read the fine print.

Bad news for Alex Thomson he appears to have issues and has reduced speed. He is talking with the technical team to see if issue is structural and can be fixed.

Depends On the issue and time he is going to lose. He does not look that much faster than Ruyan or Dalin so he could be out of contention for the win very quickly.

Sad for Thomson but this is what the Vendée Globe is about.

Jean Le Cam drops out of the top 3 It's incredible that a sailor of his caliber cannot attract a big sponsor.

https://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2020 ... dee-globe/
November 30, 2020; Day 23) – Kevin Escoffier, 40, who is racing in third place in the Vendée Globe solo non-stop around the world race, positioned some 550 nautical miles SW of Cape Town, has triggered his distress beacon. He was racing in a strong SW’ly air stream on starboard tack behind a weather front.

At 1346hrs (UTC), Escoffier managed to send a message to his shore team, explaining that he had an ingress of water into his boat. The rescue authorities (MRCC Cape Town and CROSS Griz Nez) are preparing an action plan in collaboration with his PRB shore team, with Jacques Caraës and the Vendée Globe Race Direction team.

Jean Le Cam, the nearest competitor, has changed course to sail to the last position given by the boat when the beacon was triggered (40°55 S 9°18 E). Le Cam is expected to reach the area at around 1600hrs UTC. More information to follow.

UPDATE:
17:17 – Jean le Cam has arrived in the area and has seen Kevin in his life raft. He is under engine preparing to recover Escoffier.

I recommend watching today's recap

The Jury will grant hours to all the rescue boats (Herman / Bestaven / Le Cam / Simon) These get discounted on arrival.

Apparently the French navy will Recover Escoffier near the Kerguelen Islands if no other boat can.
