Tomatoes are native to the Americas, so there was no such thing as tomato sauce in Italy until at least the 16th century

Genghis Khan brought dressage to Europe.
I guess the same with potatoes and the Brits/Irish through Sir Walter Raleigh. Although that well known nefarious organization, the Irish Potato Federation calls that a myth.PCPhil wrote: Mon Jul 06, 2020 4:50 pm Tomatoes are native to the Americas, so there was no such thing as tomato sauce in Italy until at least the 16th century![]()

That’s a bit posh - in my house we refer to it as ‘horsey dancing’.
A berry I thought. A berry has 4 things - an outer skin, an inner flesh, an inner pulp that holds the seeds, seeds - has to be more than one. Excuse my terminology.
So a strawberry is not a berry and neither is a cherry, based on that definition.
And I believe the Mandarin sign for China is a rectangle/square with the two intersecting lines that meet in the middle - as China is the centre of the world.Punter15 wrote: Mon Jul 06, 2020 6:17 pm In Mandarin, the literal translation for a penguin is ‘business goose’.
In Welsh, rat is big mouse, and toilet is little house.

i think the technical answer is it is both, the plant itself is herbacious but the fruit is a berry
Both. A banana (the yellow thing you peel and eat) is undoubtedly a fruit (containing the seeds of the plant: see answer regarding tomatoes) though since commercially grown banana plants are sterile. The seeds are reduced to little specks. However, the banana plant, though it is called a banana-tree in popular usage is technically regarded as an herbaceous plant (or herb), not a tree, because the stem does not contain true woody tissue.
