If you don’t spend the cash on running tracks and sport fields, you find it’s much harder to get fat kids into sport. Elite sport is good for everyone else.Niegs wrote: Mon Dec 07, 2020 7:34 pm I was going to rant about judged sports ... but, really, fudge the Olympics in general. All that money for what? Would be better if nations spent their cash on making it easier for people to be more active.

Wasn't breakdancing a thing in the 80s?

As a compromise; can we merge the new, "sports", with some of the existing ones ?
I wouldn't watch break dancing; but combine it the javelin; & it's a must watch event !

What event do we twin with the shooting part of that biathlon ? ... skulls or eights ?
And I didn't say don't spend it on the facilities - I implied the opposite! - just don't spend any money on the few 'elites' and all the logistics of the big dances they attend. I've seen studies that suggest 'Olympic legacy' - at best - sees a minor uptick in participation (though a few studies are dodgy to me: not compared against population increase, claiming people going for a jog or bike ride is 'athletics' and 'cycling' participation when it's more so the easiest thing to do on your own time). While there tends to be a downward trend in sport participation in many places the years following.Uncle fester wrote: Mon Dec 07, 2020 8:48 pmIt is really? Compared to some sports in, or about to be in, the Olympics, breakdancing is sublimely athletic. It certainly takes more effort and skill than, say, running 100 metres (and that's coming from a track man).
Personally, I'd eliminate all team sports, all sports that have their own 'olympics' (e.g., tennis), and all judged events. But since there's about as much chance of that happening as there is of me being transformed into a fire engine, there's no point in being snotty about breakdancing.

Clay pigeon shooting and ski jump would be one I'd watch!..
I love watching little children running and screaming, playing hide and seek in the playground.

I mean it is undoubtedly athletic, you can award Mark's for its technical and artistic merit, like ice skating or dressage or like a dozen other things that happen on ski slopes, or in gymnasiums, that they stick Olympic medals on.
There is no logical reason why you shouldn't have it.
I guess you could say public school cunts don't do it, and it is more a street, or working class form of expression, that doesn't involve daddy having to buy you horse or a boat or a ski lodge.

Is running and jumping not enough for these people? Next we’ll have handbag snatching and car stealingLine6 HXFX wrote: Tue Dec 08, 2020 4:02 pm I mean it is undoubtedly athletic, you can award Mark's for its technical and artistic merit, like ice skating or dressage or like a dozen other things that happen on ski slopes, or in gymnasiums, that they stick Olympic medals on.

Breakdancing is no more idiotic than horse ballet, synchronised swimming or the triple jump, which have all been Olympic for ages.
It's a shame that is a judged sport - get them all out of the Olympics, in particular gymnastics which is just the acceptable face of child exploitation anyway.
Although the worst of all judged sports has to be ski jumping - a perfectly fine competition to see who can jump the furthest ruined by points given for how aesthetically pleasing the jump was.
