The culture of "firmware update" on new products.

So interesting situation for you.
You buy something electronic and expensive, it doesn't work out of the box.
You think, right, i'll just update its firmware (a rather long complicated process) but hey, you have awesome IT skills let's do that..

Then after the update, hey yippie it works,

A month and a half go by and another firmware update comes along.
You update (the rather expensive electrical product) and it fails exactly like before?
Just crashes.
You revert it back, and works fine but crashes on the new firmware update (that gives lots of brilliant new features).
So instead of having exchanged it (without updating the firmware and without being a knowledgeable and responsible consumer) and just getting the shop to replace it on day one, no fucking about, and drop off a new one whilst collecting the buggerred one as it is within the no quibble 30 day warranty), you have to send it back to the shop, after six weeks, who then have to send it back to the manufactuer, who then have to order a part and repair it whilst making you wait 3 months.

When they say "just update the firmware" on new products that fail, just think about the next firmware update that could possibly brick it, and just send it back.

The new firmware update could come out, not six weeks but a year later, after your manufacturer warranty has run out.

Linus Tech tips did a big secret buy of PC's from big and small retailers, almost all of them were 6 months or more out of date on bios/drivers.

Just saying, beware of firmware updates fixing things out of the box.

Chances are when the next firmware update comes along, it will bring with it the exact same problems as before, but this time it may be outside your manufactuer warranty.
I was lucky as this update came along within weeks of receiving the item.
