The Stanley Cup playoffs start this weekend. All games will be played out of two hub cities - Edmonton & Toronto. Interestingly this will be the first time since 1925 that the SC playoffs will be played entirely on Canadian ice.

The format (if I understand it correctly) is that the top 12 teams from both conferences made the playoffs - the top 4 per conference automatically qualify for the next stage but have to play in a round robin in order to determine seeding. The bottom 8 teams (teams 5-12) are each playing in a best of five series.

The elimination round match ups are as follows:

East:

Pens
Habs

Hurricanes
Rangers

Islanders
Panthers

Leafs
Blue Jackets

----------

Oilers
Blackhawks

Predators
Coyotes

Canucks
Wild

Flames
Jets

You got it right. No warm up games, just practices. Can't wait. But gonna be strange as it's like starting a season in playoff mode. Teams certainly can't complain about coming into the playoffs "nicked up", as most often do.

Canucks were a surprise for us pre-COVID. Hope they can carry on. Game 1 is Sunday night.

Absolutely agree - last seasons playoffs were unpredictable enough. Now factor in the interrupted nature of the season (lets face it Mar 12th to August 1st functioned as an offseason) its going to be a lottery.

Its going to be strange with no teams from California, been a long time since none were in the playoffs, the Sharks by themselves have been a staple at the business end of the season.

Feckin Canadians.
It's 10:15am in the morning and I'm on my own in a bar watching a sport I don't understand.
My mate has been banging on about the start of the hockey season for weeks trying to persuade me to come and watch with him. Now he's a no show because it's raining.
Like it doesn't feckin rain in Vancouver.
I am not impressed.
The game is not too bad though.

Who else but Matthew Tkachuk involved in the first major controversy of the postseason. Hit on Schiefele causing him to leave the game - Paul Maurice says it was dirty, Tkachuk protests his innocence.

My Habs picked up the OT win behind a phenomenal performance by Carey Price. He was very poor at times this season (looked washed up), hopefully he is back to his very best.

Watch Tkachuks right foot as they go into the boards - he lifts it up and catches Schiefele in the back of the calf. Could easily have sliced his Achilles or calf muscle. But think it may have broken his ankle as he went in awkwardly. Dirty - fuck yes. Intentional - I doubt it. Should have at least got a game suspension for it.

For all the hype, Canucks looked terrible on Sunday. Hopefully they get it together.

Habs advance in the SC playoffs and remain undefeated versus the Pens in the postseason.

Good win for the Cannucks. 2-0 up against the reigning champions.
Quinn Hughes has been very impressive.

 Looking at the bracket could be a Calgary-Vancouver matchup in the next round, that will be tasty.

Tukka Rask has left the bubble citing family reasons. It doesn't look as if its an issue of bereavement or sickness in his family, I think he misses his wife and kids. There had been rumours this year (pre COVID) that he was considering retirement and that coupled with his comments about how playing hockey without fans seems like exhibition games suggests that he might be finished because his heart just isn't in it anymore.

We're not at all sure how. Out shot more than 2-1, out hit, no zone time etc etc. But in the last 2 games we've had more goals than them and our rookie goalie has stood on his head. Game 7 in 12 hours.

Brilliant documentary on youtube about the Russian Five that played on the Red Wings in the 90s. I read the book its based on last year, it too is excellent.

What a great message, here were these Russians who came to play hockey in North America who were shunned and viewed with suspicion to begin with. They were gonna steal Canadian jobs in the NHL & being from the Soviet school they were never gonna win a Stanley Cup because they had no appreciation of its history and tradition. They weren't tough enough. Then they ended up gaining acceptance and won everyone over and were responsible not only for the renaissance of an original 6 franchise but breathing life into the city of Detroit.
