Covid: 400-person wedding party in Stamford Hill broken up by police
Police broke up a wedding party with 400 guests in north London. Officers found the windows at the Yesodey Hatorah Senior Girls' School, in Stamford Hill, had been covered when they arrived at 21:15 GMT on Thursday.
The guests fled from the Charedi strictly Orthodox Jewish school when officers arrived.
The organisers are facing a £10,000 fine for breaching coronavirus regulations, while five other guests were issued £200 fines, police said.

That's fucking mental. Should be pursuing as many of them as possible with fines. I'm all in favour of police having a light touch most of the time, but this kind of deliberate, organised thing just needs to be punished to the full extent. £10k each for the bride and groom, each of their parents, whoever was presiding over the wedding and £250 or £800, whichever was the law at the time, for every single guest.tabascoboy wrote: Fri Jan 22, 2021 11:16 am WTF is wrong with people willfully ignoring the regs?

What's the craic with France and vaccines? Sub 50% willing to be vaccinated seems pretty nuts.
Is it a cultural thing or has anti vax taken an especially deep hold there?

There does seem to be a pattern with these more flagrant cases, involving sects or groups that see themselves as separate from the rest of society and/or following a higher power. Israel has also had problems getting ultra-orthodox jews to follow government guidance:
"Ultra-Orthodox Jews make up about 12% of Israel's population — but they account for as much as 60% of Israel's COVID-19 cases in major hospitals ... Many in the ultra-Orthodox community only follow the orders of rabbis, not health officials, and for weeks, many ignored government bans against large weddings and prayer services."
Just heard on the radio that the school actually outsource the hiring and usage of it's facilities and knew absolutely nothing about the wedding. The Chief Rabbi has been scathing about what happenedLobby wrote: Fri Jan 22, 2021 1:25 pmYou'd think they would know better as the School's Head died of Covid19 in April last year.SaintK wrote: Fri Jan 22, 2021 11:31 amFine the fuck out of the lot of them all and the school. I look forward to Openside trotting along shortly to dismissed it as her 3rd 'slip of the tongue' in 2 weeks. It's a tough job putting words into sentences in the right order.
But fear not, infinite monkey theorem dictates if she spews enough shit for long enough eventually she'll put some words together in the right order in a manner that make sense.

Well on the latest stats not only we have the most deaths in Europe but we have pulled ahead of Italy in deaths/million population. San Marino might be a stretch too far for us but I’m sure Boris will be optimistic.
BTW has the fat slug announced any plans to free up for a few days over Valentines day?

Very early data so far on that - more compelling is that it's nearly certain that the vaccine is effective against this strain. Less certainty about the other two, but still likely.

Yep, that's the take away for me following this casually. It's vaccines not working on new strains that shits me up.
Basically anything that threatens the exit strategy
From what I've read, the way coronaviruses mutate means we'd be more likely to see a gradual reduction in effectiveness rather than a single mutation which snaps the vaccines to useless. Which would probably mean that it'd be a good few years before the vaccine needed to be changed.Margin__Walker wrote: Fri Jan 22, 2021 6:01 pmYep, that's the take away for me following this casually. Genuine question, what the fuck is this? Who are these people? Where are they going? Why are they allowed?
My family have stuck to everything, we desperately miss our wider friends and family, why the fuck is this allowed to happen. I’m seriously pissed off sitting here

Yes, but according to Jonathan Ashworth ..........
The news that the new variant of coronavirus may be more deadly is "deeply alarming," said the shadow health secretary, "not least because Boris Johnson assured the nation back in December there was no evidence the variant was more dangerous."
What. A. Shameless. Divisive. Exploitative...... add your own perjoratives. I despair of these people.

If one was to play politics with it, then the new strain being more deadly actually works for the government narrative surely.
They can imply the high death rate now is overwhelmingly due to the impact of the new strain and minimise the focus on their inaction pre Christmas.
