Thanks GuLi. I am mightily crestfallen by that, because I thought it was a stroke of genius on my part. My weakness is not being able to see these parsings of words no matter how hard I look.

Ahah, you're right
I didn't know that word (the solution). Actually, now that I've checked in Chambers,
NONCE doesn't exist at all in English in a clerical meaning. En français, on parle de
nonce, spécialement "nonce apostolique", pour désigner un "Ecclésiastique ambassadeur
du Saint-Siège auprès d'un gouvernement étranger. Nonce du pape."(TLFI).
That was a faux-ami if I ever saw one.

That will come in time, takes a bit of experience to know how the minds of different compilers work ( and some are on a very strange wavelength at times)

Very true for the "experience" bit. My 2 cents of advice: each time you guess a word, from the bit of
definition in the clue and a few crossing letters

(everyone does that plus the other way round, i.e. starting from the
bits of parsing we can guess, e.g. "church"? Oh, there might be either CH. (common abbreviation for
church) or CE, Church of England, in the solution)
, really try to get the parsing thoroughly as well.
It helps me progress both in cryptos and in English, and in British culture. Just today I learned that 25D
with a new meaning (I thought it only was an abbr. of "anonymous") and "con" for "study". Actually I knew
that one, from previous grids, then forgot it. I'll probably forget these too, but in the long run they stick. Hopefully.
