Making some cash on the side, do you?
So got a bit bored, and thought I'd look into ways to make a little extra cash. So far I've started crypto mining on my graphics card (it's bloody cold where my computer is, so not worried about it overheating in the slightest, and it also help warm up my office!), made about £5 in 3 days, not going to get rich quick, but I figure over a few months it may actually add up! I'm not going to start espousing the wonders of crypto though, and obviously if the value drops, I'll miss out, but ah well.
Next, I decided that since I work from home anyway, to sign up for a recommended survey site. Not going too crazy, but I've managed to earn enough "points" so far, for about £4 in gift cards (including amazon), which is nice. Again, if I could make a similar £50 a month, that'd be pretty sweet, and remove any guilt from buying bits and pieces for my toys :D.
I'm still trying to keep an eye out for opportunities to snag cheap tech and use it in my system, whilst selling on my old parts, not so much money making, but trying to upgrade for very little expenditure basically.
How about you guys?

Made a few bob from Guitar related activities - the odd bit of maintenance, buying, repairing and selling guitars, teaching a couple of beginners etc.. more of hobby that pays for itself - But that's all ground to a halt since the pandemic.Raggs wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 5:53 pm So got a bit bored, and thought I'd look into ways to make a little extra cash. Tried it with my Grand Children - it was really no fun at all - would just be a chore. Mining what got you 5 quid in 3 days?
Just downloaded the nicehash miner software. It mostly seems to use ethereum I think, but it converts everything into bitcoin. I'm sure there are more efficient softwares out there, but as an easy to setup and start method, it seems to work. I'm sure they're making some off the top, and good luck to them for making such an easy to use software. Got a 1070ti.sorCrer wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 6:20 pmRaggs wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 5:53 pm So got a bit bored, and thought I'd look into ways to make a little extra cash. Less than what I earned, the software calculates profit after power consumption, you can have it automatically stop if it falls below a certain level of profit. Computer is normally on most of the day regardless, so it was only the extra work from the graphics card, which is easily covered.Ymx wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 6:44 pm How much money did you spend on power for the computer being on for 3 days?

Aye. If I complete 27 Mandatory Training Days (including an annual camp and certain training objectives) I get an £1800 bounty on top of the normal pay. You can also get paid to do recruiting or other jobs (med cover for other units on ranges, exercise etc) but it doesn't count towards your MTDs and bounty and obviously deployments.Raggs wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 6:23 pm

Crypto currency mining is how it's made, and you can do it with your home computer if it's good enough. Basically you run a software on your computer, and as long as what your "mining" is worth more than the power, and you aren't degrading the computer, it's worth it.Slick wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 6:55 pmNo idea what you are talking aboutRaggs wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 5:53 pm So got a bit bored, and thought I'd look into ways to make a little extra cash. Surveys are just online questionnaires. You can get paid to do them, so if like me you have spare time and are sat in front of the computer anyway, it a nice easy way to earn a little spending money.

The rep value in crypto mining is not so much the immediate return; it's the hope that it will significantly appreciate in future. So if you mine £5 worth of Bitcoin in 3 days, the hope is that it will be worth 10x (or 100x) that this time next year. Keep mining and appreciating and it makes sense - provided it keeps on risingRaggs wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 7:00 pmNice, not bad! I'm quite happy with my £1.50ish a day to be honest :), so as long as it doesn't go down too much is the main thing. If it goes up a bit and I end up with twice as much, it's still not going to be worth millions, so I'm not expecting millions, if you see what I mean. Few extra bob on the side for a couple of little treats on amazon is more what I'm looking at :D.Saint wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 7:13 pmThe rep value in crypto mining is not so much the immediate return; it's the hope that it will significantly appreciate in future. I didn't think you were. In simple terms as I understand it. Each Bitcoin is made up of a unique sequence of code, with set parameters. In order to actually find out all the possible sequences, they have to be calculated. And it becomes harder and harder to calculate as more are discovered. The process of discovering them is called mining. You don't generate a whole bitcoin as it's known, but in little segments, that build upto a whole coin, so you can trade these snippets. The value they have is simply decided on the value they've been given by people, as they are unique tokens that cannot be replicated (don't ask me why not), they can be well used as currency, as well as many other applications (blockchain, which is the tech itself, is what can be used in many circumstances).Slick wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 7:48 pm To be clear, I’m not being a smart arse or facetious, I have no idea what “mining” means or how that makes bitcoin or how that makes money

Mining is about being paid to provide compute to solve crypto challenges and validate transactions. And you get paid an amount if you or “your team” solves it.

Explain something to me. Why is CPU mining slower than GPU mining? Most PC's CPU is far more powerful than its graphics one.

CPUs have an order of magnitude less cores than GPUs. The GPU cores aren't as flexible as the CPU cores; but the only thing they need to do well for mining, is integer maths, & they're very good at that.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Tue Feb 16, 2021 8:57 am Explain something to me. The GPU cores aren't as flexible as the CPU cores; but the only thing they need to do well for mining, is integer maths, & they're very good at that.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Tue Feb 16, 2021 8:57 am Explain something to me. Why is CPU mining slower than GPU mining? Most PC's CPU is far more powerful than its graphics one.
Or, at least more capability to do so: because most programming doesn't utilise the benefit of parallel because
- it's too hard!
- linear processing has become so fast, only really complex applications would notice the difference
Never really looked at graphics programming and guess then it's the one area which does properly utilise parallel processing?

GPUs are explicitly designed to run parallel workloads, & they benefit from compilers, & libraries that make programming them easier.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Tue Feb 16, 2021 10:54 amCheers. The main caveat is that because they don't have as much memory as the CPU, & the cores are much smaller, & don't generally do FP calculations efficiently; you have make sure your workload fits on a GPU core.

occasionally sell old shit on ebay.

Just claimed £20 worth of amazon vouchers. Apparently takes a few days to process, but not bad.
Decided to do a couple of the offers where you have to buy things (paid £1 for lottery tickets, but got rewarded with about £5 worth of points for doing it) etc, but the vast majority of the "earnings" have come from just doing simple tasks or surveys. They clearly tempt you in with some easier points to grab to start with, but even then, not bad for just some spare time stuff. Extra bonus for coming through a referral link too, which is nice. There's a few other rewards there that are tempting, but I don't need them. Like buying 2 years worth of VPN access with a decent vpn provider (used them before), is basically fully reimbursed via the points you earn for doing it.

Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
I judge local/regional camera club competitions. Probably spend about 10 hours on each. I charge 25 quid. I do not take it but ask them to donate to charity.

How about you guys?![]()
