IIRC, a certain Clive Woodward was his coach. Which leads to another anecdote. We all know how much Woodward was into fitness and Gary used to lament that one of the reasons Ireland
used to blow out in games was a lack of fitness. He opined that Lirish was far more professional than the IRFU in that regard.
