For whatever reason I found myself looking up chanterelles in Wikipedia. Being an ignorant provincial, I’ve never tried them.

Are they as toothsome as claimed by some?

Wonderful mushroom with almost a "fruity" flavour which stay nicely firm when cooked
Never come across any in the wild though they are fairly widespread across Europe. Not cheaap if bought at a market but worth it!

Especially not at fucking Borough Market. I'll never get over my first shop there.

We must be the only country in the world where markets are more expensive than shops

Borough Market is especially bad, it's all nice stuff and all, but I don't really have thirty quid to spend on a macadamia, pecorino and truffle fusion twist surprise.

A pork pie and packet of crisps will do for me.
