Not only that, some events you can medal with a few minutes of performing, others can take hours. I actually enjoy the type of events I normally have no interest in (not cycling, sailing or rugby, naturally) as I find the competition more complelling when it is ‘new’.

Best moment of the Olympics for me, so far, was when Barshim and Tamberi were both awarded Gold in the High Jump - The Italian's reaction was just fantastic - a truly fantastic sporting moment.

Depends on where you come from.

In England rowing might be posh sport; but that's not a universal truth. In much the same way that rugby in Limerick shows that rugby, isn't the exclusive preserve of the posh private schools; rowing in Ireland isn't the exclusive reserve of the posh boys, & girls.

The Irish medalists aren't in any way, shape or form; from wealthy backgrounds; & the rowing clubs in the Galway, & Cork are open to all.

I think it's similar in Canada. Yes, there will be posh kids who got their start at a school that owns its own boat and pay an external coach (I was a teacher supervisor for the team one year!) But when I looked into doing some sprint canoe/kayak, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the local club's annual membership was cheaper than one season of a field sport.

Rowing costs a bit more now that I'm looking at it, but at least they'll be accessible by public transit, which is more than can be said for a lot of field sports these days that are re-locating to the outskirts of town or even in the country where land is cheaper. (I coached a working class 'hood high school once that was the best in the city, but almost none could play club in the summer as it was too difficult to get to with parents working, looking after siblings, need to be back for p/t jobs, etc.)

I sailed the UK circuit for quite a few years and found the cohort very mixed, very welcoming to those on low income with lending of equipment commonplace.

This has not only been an interest of mine, I'm on the verge of being accepted into a sport development grad program.

Something that struck me years ago, as someone who's always out on my bike, always taking different routes through town, is that playing fields are usually empty unless it's an organized league (some places even are gated off!). You don't see kids getting together to play something without it being organized by adults... maybe a bit of street hockey or basketball, but even that can be rare.

However, skate parks seemed to be PACKED by all ages at most times of day. I've read some studies of it where many are, at worst, 'neutral' where everyone does their own thing (but likely checking each other out for inspiration/critique/learning), but there could also be lots of mentoring going on as well.

I know rugby shoots itself in the foot by being shite at outreach, sticking to tradition too much (must do what everyone else does, no local adaptations to suit people's needs), and (here for sure) having pitches in the worst spots, often well away from public transit (my last club was in a farm field 15kms from the centre of town).

Largely anecdotal but the amount of anti-social behaviour from kids I see in England has radically reduced over the last 15 years, at the same time as a lot of the funding you've mentioned has been cut.
My cricket club used to have constant vandalism, up to and including the clubhouse being burned down. We've had nothing for five years or more now.

Pet theory is that the kids who used to do this spend their time gaming now.

I think the 'posh sport' point can be overplayed in a UK context. Anything horse related is a great example of the limits on this.

People born well inland taking up sailing/surfing etc? Sure, likely got some cash. People born on the coast, much less so.

The Chinese girl in the weightliting is going to win this at a canter. All the other medal contenders are taking their third C&J attempt at somewhere in the 155-160kg range. Li Wenwen hasn't even bothered taking her first attempt yet, declaring her entry at 170kg. Lifted 140kg in the snatch, 12kg more than second place.

Actually, everyone else is finished now, so she's decided to come in at 162, given the heaviest anyone else lifted was 161. That 161 being the British girl, Emily Campbell, who has got the silver medal, first ever medal in Women's weightlifting for GB>

Wenwen lifts 162, then jumps up to 173 and lifts that, then nominates 180 for her third.

And she lifts 180 as well. Quite remarkable. Didn't bother starting until everyone had finished in both categories of lift. Won by a total of 37kg over the two lifts.

The British jolly hockey sticks team just beat the Spanish jolly hockey sticks team on penalties.

Caught the last 20 of the replay of Canada's victory over the Yank lasses in the football.
