Are there a couple of journalists on every RN ship all the time? Does this sort of thing happen all the time but there's not usually journalists around to report it? Is it pure coincidence that on the rare occasion this happens there also happens to be a press pack on board?

Happens all the time in baltic sea.

You hear about it more often because French German Italian English ... plane are involved.

Delivering the June 2016 vote is the entire reason for its existence so they would probably prefer to emphasise the date not distract from it).

Annexation of Crimea, the threats to the Baltics, South China seas...none of these things are related to Brexit and British forces are involved (rightly IMO) in the international response to all of them

The Russians are partially doing this to get ELINT off of the T45 Destroyer.

It has the most advanced (and capable) Anti-Air radar suite in the world at present.

It could swat all the planes out of the sky easily

No doubt that’s true. It isn’t the first time that a 45 class has been buzzed in the Black Sea, there was a tv documentary about it a year or two ago. On a parochial note Cammell Laird just down the road from me has the billion pound contract to upgrade them.

Its all low grade shithousing based on the assumption no-ones going to actually start shooting for real. The Russians would not seriously try and sink a modern Air Warfare destroyer with a few Su24s and coastguard vessels - likewise a single ship however capable would not expose itself to the full weight of the Russians pretty fearsome anti surface capability a few miles from Russian controlled territory.

Appreciate the RN is the only navy in the world to have some serious live experience of naval anti-air measures since WW2 but I do have some concerns that British ships seem to comprehensively defeat all air threats in every exercise they announce.

What do I know? I’d guess that our tech is pretty high for things like Type 45 and Astute. The trouble is we don’t have the resources to procure them quickly enough and in sufficient numbers.

Obviously PR guff involved but our submarines are very well regarded.

So much of tech upgrades is fighting the last war stuff - West would have been involved in ordering/procuring/maintaining air defence systems, and his ship went down due to air attacks in the Falklands. No surprise it's a higher priority for the RN than the Americans.
