Duke of Edinburgh.....................

I'd say he's buggered.
No public funeral?
Supposedly he' s asked for a relatively quiet military style funeral, although as the Queen's consort he's entitled to a full blown state funeral. There might be a public holiday but I doubt it
It will be a sad day when he goes, he has been part of the scenery for all of my life.Saint wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 6:30 pmOperation Forth BridgeEnzedder wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 6:04 pm First year I haven't picked him in a death pool for ages.

This royal dukedom is inheritable, so it will pass to Charlie boy as a junior title. Assuming he does finally become King, it will then be said to have "merged with the Crown" - the theory is that he would then recreate it for Edward, which is why he was only made a Royal Earl on his marriage to Sophie rather than a Royal Duke
Nobody. He's only the third one in History, it's a title used very rarely by the Royal Family for someone who needs a title but for whom there isn't an obvious one.
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
Irascible old fart but has done his duty to Queen and country that's for sure!Openside wrote: Thu Feb 18, 2021 1:18 pmIt will be a sad day when he goes, he has been part of the scenery for all of my life.Saint wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 6:30 pmOperation Forth BridgeEnzedder wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 6:04 pm First year I haven't picked him in a death pool for ages.

Yup. A rarity allowed in to try and limit the damage of in breeding.
A friend of mine went to Peter Phillips wedding at Windsor Castle a few years ago. They stayed the night then the next morning went for a stroll in the grounds.
At one point a horse and carriage came steaming along the path they were on so they stepped to the side to let it past. Prince Philip pulls up, looks at them, and says "Get off my fucking grass!" and drives off.

I'll volunteer for it! I might be (as probably a few others here) could be a very distant relative to the Windsors (through Diana in my case).Torquemada 1420 wrote: Thu Feb 18, 2021 3:16 pmYup. A rarity allowed in to try and limit the damage of in breeding.

As we’re all fairly sure you’re younger than him, this isn’t exactly a blinding insight.Openside wrote: Thu Feb 18, 2021 1:18 pmIt will be a sad day when he goes, he has been part of the scenery for all of my life.Saint wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 6:30 pmOperation Forth BridgeEnzedder wrote: Wed Feb 17, 2021 6:04 pm First year I haven't picked him in a death pool for ages.

I love watching little children running and screaming, playing hide and seek in the playground.

Must be the last public figure of State anywhere in the world to have seen active service in the War?
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember with advantages, What feats he did that day
Think that there's a former Japanese PM still living who was in the Imperial armyPaddington Bear wrote: Fri Feb 19, 2021 8:48 am Must be the last public figure of State anywhere in the world to have seen active service in the War?

the cantankerous sod will probably be laughing away in his casket, knowing that covid will stop there being a big, song & dance, of a State Funeral.
TBF to the bastard, there he'd already ruled out a state funeral for himself. Anyone expecting a bank holiday will be upset.fishfoodie wrote: Sun Feb 21, 2021 10:30 pm the cantankerous sod will probably be laughing away in his casket, knowing that covid will stop there being a big, song & dance, of a State Funeral.

RIP. One of a kind bloke

Shame he didn't make the 100 but 99 is a great knock.
He had loose lips and views perhaps we can generously say were "of his time" but by all accounts was a good Navy man serving during the war and seems to have played his role as Queens consort well.
Watch the media use this to include Harry and Meghan to create another story.

“Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true.”
He'll be using this as another excuse to wrap himself in the Union flag and mouth jingoistic platitudes, with a willing media haranguing anyone who doesn't publicly flog themselves in an act of mourning.
And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
Nothing wrong showing pride in Britain when it's your job to represent it. Philip served this country well for nearly all his life , would be odd not to acknowledge that, and respect that.Biffer wrote: Fri Apr 09, 2021 11:38 amHe'll be using this as another excuse to wrap himself in the Union flag and mouth jingoistic platitudes, with a willing media haranguing anyone who doesn't publicly flog themselves in an act of mourning.

Looks like the cricket is taking the sensible option and playing on. MCC rushed staff out to stick all the flags at half mast.

I got a silver D Of E award.
Anyway...Wonder if he approved of universal credit and foodbanks and massive taxcuts for the rich, on the backs of 135 thousand austerity deaths..
Because I'm guessing he did,
For all we know about him he was just Donald Trump with food discipline.

That's true, but I doubt that the kids doing it are doing so out of any particular affection for the duke himself?Paddington Bear wrote: Fri Apr 09, 2021 11:52 amHe's referencing DofE, which has been a pretty great scheme tbf.sturginho wrote: Fri Apr 09, 2021 11:50 amSure Boris...Boris Johnson said he "inspired the lives of countless young people"

All a bit semantic really and not worth picking apart someone's eulogy. 'He set up a successful scheme that has benefitted many people' or words to that effect aren't a bad thing to have on your record.sturginho wrote: Fri Apr 09, 2021 11:59 amThat's true, but I doubt that the kids doing it are doing so out of any particular affection for the duke himself?Paddington Bear wrote: Fri Apr 09, 2021 11:52 amHe's referencing DofE, which has been a pretty great scheme tbf.
