The UN - WHO- IOC - FIFA same all same all
Though the ballot was secret, UN Watch has determined that at least four of the 15 EU and Western Group democracies on ECOSOC—which include Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Latvia, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States—voted for Iran.

and why?
Dammit been wanting to use that one and missed the opportunity.Marylandolorian wrote: Thu Apr 22, 2021 7:08 pmYeah, this was my question, why do we need a Commission on Women’s Rights, anyway ?BnM wrote: Thu Apr 22, 2021 6:58 pm It will be in return for something from Iran. It's just women innit.![]()
And Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Pakistan and Yemen. Oman, UAE, Qatar, Jordan and Kuwait.
If the UN is looking to improve Women’s Rights in that region of male fuckwits, there’s no better place to pick a good role model than in Tehran.
Errr...Sandstorm wrote: Thu Apr 22, 2021 7:54 pm Iran actually treat their women rather well. Are you not perhaps mixing them up with several of their neighbours?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_rights_in_Iran"Thare no laws that penalize or prevent the dismissal of pregnant women from work, nor are there laws that provide rights for paternity or parental leave or tax-deductible payments for childcare. The Iranian Civil Code confers power on a husband to prevent his wife from taking any job found to be incompatible with the family interest or the dignity of the husband or his wife. Women have no legal protection against domestic violence or sexual harassment by anyone, and the constitution has no non-discrimination clause with gender as a protected category.
According to some reports, hundreds of Iranian women are killed each year in honor killings.[119] A 2019 report concluded that "nearly 30 percent of all murder cases in Iran were honor killings of women and girls."[
In 2019 three women arrested for "disrespecting compulsory hijab" were sentenced to a total of 55 years and six months by a "Revolutionary Court" in Iran
If you're looking to just level up in region, then fine. I would personally pick a higher target than that - this is a body that's supposed to represent the world, not just level down to the lowest common denominator and work up from thereSandstorm wrote: Thu Apr 22, 2021 8:06 pmAnd Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Pakistan and Yemen. Again I agree with youSaint wrote: Thu Apr 22, 2021 8:12 pm I would also add that for a country like Iran, this type of level of UN membership is far more about Realpolitik than it is about actually doing something worthwhile to achieve the theoretical goals of this commission.
I know this is NPR rather than planetrugby, but I am feeling very confused right now. No they don’t. Amongst individuals in some of the big urban areas it is better but as a state they treat them like shit and out of the cities it’s also shitSandstorm wrote: Thu Apr 22, 2021 7:54 pm Iran actually treat their women rather well. UN Watch, eh? They seem like a front for Israeli interests.
Israel itself is dedicated to keeping Iran outside the global community. They are terrified of normalised relations between Iran and the rest of the world which is why they undermine every action intended to achieve that outcome.
This one is no different. Surely the best way to haul Iran and its theological rulers into the 21st century is to include them. Not Israeli policy though, is it, and therefore not UN Watch's policy either.

Good post. The ruling class in Iran are a bunch of mediaeval dickheads but the population as a whole has always given me the impression of being open to progressive ideas and hungry for change.Muttonbird wrote: Fri Apr 23, 2021 2:50 am UN Watch, eh? They seem like a front for Israeli interests.

By cutting them off you allow the mullahs to strengthen their grip on power. This appointment may force them to face and deal with ideas that challenge the status quo.

I mean women in the UK have it all, jobs, career, kids, the freedom to do anything they like.
Unless they are socialist, or want to protest anything of any significance. Then the very least that will happen to them is they will have a undercover copper trying to impregnate them.

I actually (having worked for substance misuse for 5 years) started to question everything.
Not that I do drugs, way too much real world, up at 5 in the morning responsibilities, just that if you can get all the pleasure in the world out if a 3 quid tablet..and just gnore all the judgmental wankers (WHO WOULD HATE YOU ANYWAY) why the fuck wouldn't you?
